Anything that's grindcore and listed on my favorite bands. I'm pretty partial to Circle of Dead Children at the minute. Um. Bodies in the Gears of the Apparatus are really fucking good too. Check out the song "A lubricated Rubber Glove and Pornographic Photos of a Decapitated Chinese Hooker"

The Locust are like, experimental grindcore / technical. Just like Daughters. They're on the top of my list.

it's my opinion that there's no such thing as grindcore... it's just a different way to play harder faster metal/punk... and as far as crust punk goes... it's the exact same thing.

granted dystopia and soylient green aren't the same band musically, but neither is slayer or sepultura, yet they were both considered thrash bands.

but in the spirit of the thread

What the fuck is grindcore? I probably like some of the groups but all these subgenres are just beyond me.

From my limited understanding grindcore is to metal what crust is to punk. As far as I understand it, the sound is so similar that the real difference is the "scene". Is it a Metal club or Arena or a punk basement, along with the rest of the metal or punk scene- fans, distributors, etc.

Dystopia is usually described as crust. I recommend the interview in the anarcho-punk publication
Profane Existence. Here is the point of interest:

PE: Your music has a really heavy and metalish sound with death metal characteristics. Its seems you would have a lot of appeal in that scene and a lot of bands as started in the same period that you did have taken that path...
D: In the death metal scene?
PE: Yeah.
T: I don't like death metal.
D: OK, here's the deal- Todd does not like death metal. Period.
T: Our earlier shit has a grind edge, or whatever. But I think it's got a lot more powerful and complex.
D: See, I like death metal.
PE: The point of the question is- have you had any offers from that sort of scene to sign to a label or whatever?
T: No, not really.
D: Yeah, but we're not saying anything., not a damn thing.

I would be interested in hearing from alternative definitions, but thats the closest i've seen to match the reality of split between crust and grindcore.

To make matters more confusing, Napalm Death started as a punk band.

My favorite grindcore band besides Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror, could just as easily jump ship to a crust punk label. However, they have chosen to dwell in the metal scene since 1985.

I don't understand why their is a split between crust punk and grindcore.

Holy shit! I just realized Painkiller's drummer/vocalist was Mick Harris, the last founding member of Napalm Death to leave the band.

"Grindcore was Micky's (Mick Harris) term" says (Napalm Death) singer Mark Greenway: "It didn't come from the press, we invented it". Concerning the definition of what is grind, he says:"Grind can be anything from ultrafast thrash to really slow, heavy and dense music like early Swans".

In light of this news, I add Painkiller (Mick Harris, John Zorn, and Bill Laswell). I also recommend checking out the Mich Harris website- Pigface, ENT, Scorn, etc.

Napalm Death for inventing the genre and still being innovative 20 yrs. on

But for sheer musical and song writing talent it has to go to Nasum(RIP) The greatest band this genre has ever produced. If you like Grindcore and don't know them I suggest you go out and get all their albums: Inhale/Exhale, Human 2.0, Helvete and Shift.
