U2. Bleh. Give a decent band a pretentious lead singer, and I guess the possibilities are endless.

The Sex Pistols Too. I don't like their music and for all the people that say that they were amazing. Well they were formed for commercial reasons.

A guy working at a vintage clothing shop saw these guys and liked their style of clothing and asked them to start a band. The kids said the didn't play any music. The manager said it didn't matter. They named themselves the sex pistols.

The Sex Pistiols Suck.

Radiohead is good.
Pink Floyd is good.

Anything else played on the radio today sucks.

They are loved by music snobs. They suck. They sound fucking terrible. They get put in a ton of top 10 bands of all time list. That is wrong.

Presumptuous horseshit. Hate 'em all you want. I like them, and I'm far from a 'music snob.'

so the basis of your arguement for why the beatles are so overrated is 'their songs are simple, and easy to play'

sooo, Yngwie Malmsteen has to be the greatest ever, because his songs are REALLY hard top play, eh?

Good call Dopp... have you seen Bad News Tour? (80's glam-metal satire) .. theres a scene where 'Vim' the singer/guitarist is talking about how when Jimmy Page wrote Stairway to Heaven he was 21, and Vim learned to play it when he was 18, so he's technically better than Page... anyway its hilarious stuff...

im with you Debread, i cant believe SY have been mentioned anywhere near this thread. They are one of the most original and challenging bands of the last 20 years, mostly built through word of mouth, touring and great reviews from respected critics. When I think over-rated i think more along the lines of bands that are over-hyped or over-advertised and shoved down your throat. The fact that SY are a band loved by 'music snobs', ie: the kind of people to which music is probably the most important thing in their lives, only proves how important they are.

The Misfits....is anybody actually paying attention to what they are listening to when it comes to them? I'm still sticking to my theory that 99% of the people you see with a Misfits sticker or shirt like the skull image thing and what they look like a hell of a lot more than the music and probably don't even listen to the music that much. If not then I'll have to believe that there are millions of tone deaf people out there...well actually I do believe this already.

I'd be very interested as why you think the Doors are overrated. Their music, a radically different combination of Blues and Rock, was phenomonal. Jim Morrison was an amazing poet first and foremost, and a captivating lead singer as well. I don't really buy the whole young and good looking thing, 'cause if you ever seen Mr. Morrison at the end of his life, he had long hair and rats-nest of a beard. Not exactly Backstreet boys material.

Though I do agree with Denis Leary that movie was way too long. wink

Rage Against the Machine are also over-rated as hell. Their stuff sounds good on the radio, but listening to more than three songs in a row is like eating a pound of chocolate. Hey guys, here's an idea, instead of singing about politics, sing about stuff people can relate to, like girls and love!

Uh, dude, that's exactly why they are so good. Everybody and their grandmother's sung a song about girls and love. Some of it has been really good and affecting, some of it not so much.

But the politics and such that RATM sung about did affect certain people, myself for one. They're one of the bands that really put me one path towards wanting to more stuff about the world I live in.

If you think they are over-rated, that's fine, but to say they're over rated because they sang songs of a political nature just doesn't hold much water.

are you fucking nuts, the misfits (samhain and danzig too) are one of the greatest bands out there. very basic rock and roll tunes, with the best singer of our time. who but glenn danzig could sing about killing babies and raping your mother and actually make it sound cool. incidently, though, you are probably right to say people like them because of their symbol, after all, it's a pretty good symbol.

I'm not one to think that only good musicians can make good music but they are just plain pathetic. The Misfits make the Ramones and the Sex Pistols look like virtuosos.

Just a correction that you are so wrong. It would be the "new" Misfits that are beyond overrated; all respect to Jerry but the Misfits are nothing without Danzig, who lyrics and voice are proven to drop more bitches panties than a GYN.

i'm not so much opposed to her and her music as much as i am her phenomonal fan base... the thing that really confuses me is her fans are composed of so many people who wouldn't normally listen to the type of music she even plays... although i can see from your tastes in your profile(yes i looked in your profile and im stalking you, boo!) that its understandable in your situation... however i dont understand fans of industrial and even death metal that list their music favorites and then standing out is... tori amos! i know it sounds like im being close-minded, but i really don't think i am... cuz the thing that irks me is i think theres alot of other talented musicians like her that can play good music of that type too, but they dont relate to those fans at all... i don't get why shes the only piano playing songstress thats popular among youths in such a way... the responses that i get are usually that "her lyrics are dark" but i still don't see it reason enough for her to be this popular in a "goth/metal/punk/some other stupid label" audience... i'm not a fan but i probably wouldn't mind her so much if everybody i knew didn't listen to her... so if anyone feels the need to get defensive towards me, consider that i'm probably not referring to you in the first place

Most over-rated band is definetly The Strokes. Those prep-school boys need a good ass-whuppin'. I guess their snot-nosed indifference is what everyone likes about them. They're cute, but I prefer a band that breaks a sweat on stage.

My feeling about how the Doors are over-rated is due the ongoing glorification of the band by baby boomers and people who are still stuck in the 1960s (exhibit A: that horrible Oliver Stone movie). Then there's the constant dredging up of unreleased material, usually of a pretty shoddy variety, and how the surviving members of the band don't let it go. You don't see Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr running off to tour with Liam and Noel Gallagher as "The 21st Century Beatles."
I don't really consider Morrison to be a poet, in my mind, he's not a songwriter on the level of John Lennon or Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen (HE'S a poet).
I mean, they were an OK band, but if I had to list groups that summed up the 1960s and who were dangerous and sexy with charismatic front-men, I would certainly put them far behind the Rolling Stones, the Stooges and the Velvet Underground.

Rage Against the Machine are also over-rated as hell. Their stuff sounds good on the radio, but listening to more than three songs in a row is like eating a pound of chocolate. I don't think RATM are over-rated because of their politics, they're over-rated because there's nothing beyond the politics. The Clash and R.E.M are great bands, but there's far more to both of them than just political hectoring and a one-note sound. RATM just get kind of boring after 2-3 songs becuse there are no dynamics, no ups and downs, just political rap-rant, chorus, political-rap rant, chorus, noisy guitar solo, political rap rant.
