Anyone who thinks the Beatles are overrated really needs to read and listen to more music.

Just a quick point, we all seem to be ganging up on Acid Bather here, and while I think this is all in the spirit of friendly debate, I just wanted to state that you have the right to your opinion and it took balls to be able to express one that you knew would be so unpopular.

Doppelganger said:so the basis of your arguement for why the beatles are so overrated is 'their songs are simple, and easy to play'

sooo, Yngwie Malmsteen has to be the greatest ever, because his songs are REALLY hard top play, eh?

Maybe you should bother to read that I had more to the post... but alas, it's better for your "argument" if you don't... isn't it? whatever

And I'd take Yngwie over the Beatles.... but that's just cause I dislike the Beatles sound

As to Dr. Necissitor... I've studied musical theory since i was 5, and still think the Beatles are highly overrated. Not saying they weren't good... but they are overrated. Some of you aren't comprehending what overrated means... maybe I'll get the dictionary for you...

They really ARE that good, but you're not into what they did...which is fine.

Maybe you ought to define what you mean by 'overrated.'

overrated does not always have to equal bad...most of the time, it just means making a band greater than they really are/were.

The Beatles are good. But they are overrated.

N*sync
Britney Spears
NKOTB

half of the pop music shoved down our throats is overrated. in this case, it's often because it's bad, but the glitz that comes along with it tries to shadow that.

Overrated: To overestimate the merits of; rate too highly.

The Beatles don't deserve all the praise they got. I respect what they did for music, but they did that without doing so through their music. There's really nothing that special about their music, and they get praised for that... it's almost anti-logic. "Wow, this band is so simple, primitive, bland, and boring... that they're amazing" ... NO! (well, that's how I see it anyway.. I can see how people like them though, I just don't)
They had controversy, good looks, and the fan base that nowadays would get them labelled as a "boy band." But when you take away all that, and look just at their music.. .... ..they really aren't the greatest band ever, as most people claim them to be.

other examples of being overrated, would be: The Sex Pistols (their music was nothing. Complete and utter shit... but what they did caused a ruckus and a half), The Ramones (they used the same 4 chords for 90% of their songs, and the same progression.. same melody... their songs were almost all the same, just different lyrics)... those are (in my mind) the 3 most overrated bands ever.

I agree with you on the Sex Pistols, but not the Ramones, and I differ on the reasons. I think the Sex Pistols are overrated because they get all the credit for creating a music that the Ramones did first and the Clash did better. They didn't invent shit. They were just the most generic of the early punk bands.

There were other precursors, but the Ramones were the first ones who could REALLY be called punk.

Motley f,n Crue!Tho I kinda liked "Shout at The Devil and nothing afterwards. I remember hearing Nikki Sixx say " We started the whole LA metal scene" Completely over rated.
Pearl Jam for damn sure. Even tho Creed and such bands try to get the vocals from them( Even more reason to damn them)
Almost any Rap act because lyric wise the songs are interchangable and so are the beats.Me ME Me Bling bling bling 18 inch wheels, guns and ho's im so bad.
Mike Myers writes more entertaing rap lyrics.
And in particular Nelly, because every one of his songs sound exactly alike.

To say that almost all rap sounds like that shows an ignorance of the underground hip-hop scene, where there are a lot of artists who sound nothing like that unless they are obviously trying to be intentionally sarcastic (i.e. Sage Francis's "Xaul Zan's Heart")

Some good hip hop artists:

Public Enemy
Buck 65
Sole
SAGE FRANCIS!!! (also look him up under the Non-Prophets, which is him and his producer, Joey Beats)
