No seriously, they did. Which is good, I've been waiting about ten years for that.

Relevant quotes:

Finally, someone has apologised for helping invent emo. The Get Up Kids, the recently re-formed Missouri band that launched the soundtrack to 10 million eyeliner-wearing adolescences, have said that they are sorry.

"If this is the world we helped create," guitarist James Suptic said, after looking into the crowd at a reunion gig, "then I apologise."

While acts like Fall Out Boy pay tribute to Get Up Kids, the feeling isn't mutual. "If a band gets huge and they say we inspired them – great," Suptic said. "The problem is most of them aren't very good. What does that say about us? I don't know. Maybe we sucked."

All sentiments I've shared for years. Nice to finally be vindicated.

Well, they suck. They should apologize for that first.

And "emo" didn't start with them. Unfortunately, what people now call emo is terrible music and no one listens to Rites of Spring anymore.

Baby steps, man, they're starting to consider the possibility that they do, in fact, suck. Or did. That's a good start.

Ah, grasshopper, but Rites of Spring didn't suck, the Get Up kids' innovation was suckiness. That was the crucial ingredient to launching emo as a whole scene.

That Fugazi was ever considered emo is a travesty.

But their music really was emotional!

That and at the time no one realized how important a part of the genre sucking would be.

For the exact same reason that it's a shame people refer to Joy Division as goth.

But that's just wrong. They aren't goth at all.

Guy Picciotto of Fugazi was in (probably) the first Emo group. And Ian Mackaye's label put out the first emo records.

The hidden part of this message is the Get Up Kids taking credit for Emo. Which is kind of douchey to begin with.

I seriously doubt ICP will apologize for anything, much less that.

It would be interesting to see if anyone ever apologizes for autotune voice modulations because that shit is reaaal annoying.

I'm not sure which is more annoying: those over-autotunings that are so styley now, or the less obvious but autotuned-to-lifeless-perfection vocals on just about everything else...

I'm just glad that someone who HELPED starting the trend apologized. No one band can claim they invented emo. Swedish bands like Refused had that queer hair cut before it became fashionable here and they didn't even sound emo. Somewhere along the line, kids started crying to a melody and magically attributed a fashion trend to it. And I for one, as a high school teacher, am glad someone is trying to maybe make it uncool. I am sick of emo kids and their antics! I deal with that shit every morning!
