Anyone seen that "Hunted" movie with Benicio DelToro and Tommy Lee Jones? Not very impressive, but it has a pretty kick-ass, very apropos Cash tune at the end.

"God said to Abraham, kill Me a son." Creepy. skull

And Cash is cool beyond age and generation!!

That's a cover of Bob Dylan's "Highway 61" actually.

Hmm, I think I'll check that movie out now. I like it when movies have songs with lyrics that connect with the scene.

That has got to be the coolest picture ever...That's better than Keith Richards passed out in the make up chair. Life is good.

Cash was a greater contributor to the public good than Elvis ever was. I am not an Elvis fan. Elvis was the Britney of his era. Promotion over substance. Granted, he had a way with presentaion but he was not a creator. He was a construction of Colonel Tom and RCA. Johnny was the real shit.

Elvis started strong and then was overcome by his own bullshit. Cash started the same as Elvis but Johnny GREW with his Art. Can you see fuckin' obese redneck Elvis doing an album with Rick Rubin?

Johnny was Hank Williams. Elvis was Hank Williams Jr. Any questions?

"I was asked to give a statement on Johnny's passing and thought about writing a piece called Cash is King because that is the way I really feel. In plain terms, Johnny was and is the North Star; you could guide your ship by him--the greatest of the greats then and now. I first met him in 62 or 63 and saw him alot in those years. Not so much recently, but in some kind of way he was with me more than people i see every day...."

- Dylan on Johnny's death.

such a beautiful statement about johnny cash. He will continue to influence and inspire people long after his death.

It is an interesting thing, that there is so much talk about Johnny being a badass or whatnot, but conversation will often be avoided when it comes to the religious and spiritual nature of him.
I once played an LP of hymns sung by Kitty Wells and a lot of people made fun of it. However, I can throw on Johnny's hymns and nobody says boo. Shit, people will give me flack for playing Carter Family religious songs!
I am not a Christian, but I believe it was an integral part of Johnny's life. Too many people make him out to be biggest tough guy, and he very well may have been, but those people often ignore the reverent side.

What a great point. Johnny, like many of the stepped-on and downtrodden folks to whom his work spoke to so well, found solace in religion. Its an integral part of his music and of who he was.

i often equate cash's christianity to someone like fyodor dostoevsky, who in his novels chose to focus on the damned and the outcast of society (so, for that matter, did jesus) instead of the pious and powerful. this approach says to me that one has to go through the darkness in order to see the light more clearly. it's a necessary part of one's enlightenment.

representations of him later in life - his roles in "the simpsons," the video for "hurt" and the cremaster cycle come immediately to mind - barely depict him as a human being, but as this shapeshifting force - a spirit animal, a cloud of bees or a gothic king - that reflects all of our own hopes, fears, passions and desires like a prism. it reminds me that past the music industry's petty factionalism, occasionally, there come certain people like bob marley or dylan or the beatles or tupac that walk through these barriers that separate us as people as if they never existed. then those people disappear, and it always seems to be too soon.

hopefully, one day, our culture will deserve another artist like johhny cash.

With any artist you gotta take everything, the gun toting, the speed, the cool tunes, the hymns, the beautiful stuff with June Carter, hell even the bad stuff (now be honest y'all - Cash was the man but his version of 'We'll Meet Again' is just embarassing).

I been into Johnny Cash for a while, even got the word Cash tatooed on my back a few years back and I don't mind if his death makes him cool to new people, even those who took the piss out of me. People who never gave country a chance are now buying Cash albums! On the strength of MTV championing 'Hurt'. Thats cool.

"But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die" - apocalyptic country don't get no better than that.

Don't get mad because Johnny is a "fashion accessory". I hate that fucking mentality. A new audience is being introduced to a great library of music, what's bad about that?

And if people buy a Johnny Cash album just to be cool.......so fuckin what, another couple of bucks for the Cash Estate.

Johnny Cash was a recording star for over 50 years.........he floated in and out of popular culture. While the die-hards never left him, there were always new fans developing.

So those of you who get mad at the kids buying JC albums just because they saw him on Mtv, or just be cause he died....I invite you to tounge my balls for a few hours. If you're a real fan of the man's music, you'd want it to be shared by as many as possible. If you met Johnny face to face......would you tell him that you don't want new people to listen to his music because they haven't been Johnny Cash fans as long as you have?

My earliest memory that involves music was skeaking into my Mom's record collection to play Johnny Cash Live from Folsom Prison because I thought "Boy Named Sue" was a funny song. I was around 5 years old. So you could say I've been a fan of Johnny almost my whole life. That being said, I hope new people buy his music every fucking day. I hope Mtv does a Goddam 6 hour special on him. I hope Carson Daly does a Johnny Cash TRL show.

So screw you people and your "I was country when country wasn't cool" attitude. Yay, you've been a fan of somebody's music longer than a 16 year old kid.

Any 60 plus year old Christian who would not only sit and listen to current songs by people like Danzig, Beck, NIN, and Soundgarden, is worthy of respect. the pousers will soon enough fade away, and move on to the next trend they are sold, so wave and smile at them while they are around, and when the trend has passed look around and see who is still there and you will see the people who are true.
