I like it a lot. I'm not sure what you mean about coherent, though.

It is their most coherent album since De-Loused (my favorite). Frances and, more-so, Amputechture were out there, a lot more insane and less centralized where sound was concerned. Bedlam was chaotic, but still felt like it had some general structure. Octahedron feels like their most stabilized and pleasant to the ears, throughout.

I think part of this lays at the feet of Omar putting out so much insanity in his numerous solo efforts.

Goliath and Amputecture had some astonishingly good moments, (e.g. Soothsayer love love ) but were generally patchy. This one was much better.

I actually think it's their worst album so far. The drumming is really lacking for me, and none of the songs jumped out at me on my first listen. Everyone I know feels similarly about it too. Maybe it'll grow on me...

I heard a rumor Omar cracked and admitted he might come back to at the drive in. Couldn't cite the interview, wondering if anyone else has heard the same?

I'm actually intrigued as to what this album sounds like now. I'm not a hardcore fan of Mars Volta, but I always like what I do hear. I have a few friends who love them, but they haven't said much to me about it.

I'm gonna have to pick it up.

I've only given it a few listens so far but I like it enough to want to give it more time without being overwhelmed by it. I think it will be a grower...

i'll give it a go. 'De-loused' was so epic for me and then the other's were all a bit of a letdown compared to what i was expecting. but i'll pick it up and see.

I would definitely agree that it's more cohesive. A friend of mine has been listening to it, even though he couldn't get into the other Volta Albums.

I like the contrast between it and Bedlam in Goliath. Bedlam starts right out of the gates and sounds totally chaotic, whereas the first track on Octahedron takes over a minute to even really start.

I really need to go back and give the first few albums a fair listen. At the time I was really only buying them to see what kinds of crazy stuff the Mars Volta had come up with, but I've come to really enjoy their sound lately.
