Thanks to a new connection I'm now getting the occasional free show tickets and there is one week in particular where I'm seeing about 5 shows. Having made fun of people who wear earplugs to shows as being lamewads but now that I'm going to be going to so many shows I think I may need them to save what's left of my hearing.

So what's the verdict on earplugs, impossibly lame or just good common sense?

I wear earplugs at concerts a lot of the time. It can drown out a lot of the subtleties but, especially if I'm feeling like shit already, it saves me a LOT of pain.

sometimes live music sounds better through earplugs... although i could never wear them while playing. i had to be damn near bleeding in my ears to get in the right mood to ROCK. plus, you want to be able to hear what the hecklers are saying. ARRR!!!

rock is meant to rock! but if you're going to that many shows man, you might want to get a set of hi-fidelity plugs so that you can still rock when you're 80. i plan on rocking when i am 80. naked. hi-fi plugs are like 20 bucks and they reduce volume without taking too much of a certain frequency out. it's like turning the volume down to an appropriate level. or you can get plugs molded for your ears, and then control how much of a decrease in volume you want. but that's like 100 plus... peafe

i always wear earplugs to shows and during band practice. i developed a fear of losing my hearing after having a few especially loud shows that left me with a mild case of tinnitus.

I used to carry them around with me all the time but I kept losing them in me pockets. Now I just carry around a paper towel with me to crumble up and stick into my ear just in case an Iron Maiden concert breaks out in the middle of the street on the way to getting some coffee

Ahh to be 19 again. I would have probably said the same thing.

Please wear earphones. My monitor ear is recognizably duller than my other ear.

I like these torpedo plugs... you don't lose the high end - it just sort of brings down the decibles. You can get them at music stores or, in a pinch, the ones at hardware stores will do.

Keeping your hearing by wearing some of the nice, new plugs nobody will see = Extremely Cool.

You are not lame for taking care of yourself.

... and that Devo joke was funny as hell. tongue

A year ago, I would've said earplugs are for pussies. But I went and saw The Distillers recently, and although I had a wonderful view of the goddess that is Brody, I was also right next to the speaker. My ears didn't stop ringing for a week and a half. I thought I was stuck with that ringing for life.

After i saw Motorhead a couple of years ago i was literally deaf for something like three whole days. It was one of the scarier times in my life.

These days i do notice that my hearing is not what it used to be so in retrospect i wish i had worn plugs at least some of the times throughout my many concert goings.

A good way to future proof yourself and not be the old "Whaaaat??!!!" geezer type...grab some toilet paper out of the bathroom and MacGuyver some earplugs out of that.

Spending 5 dollars on those foamy things are for suckas wink

i saw lightning bolt, and they were so loud i could feel the pressure in my ears, but no pain, no ringing, nothing. this makes me super hardcore. however, this also makes me about 1/4 of the way deaf at age 20. if you value your hearing, wear them! its prudent! but i will still make fun of you if i see you wearing them hehe wink

That's the best! Mocking people for wearing earplugs while wearing them yourself. When they yell "You got 'em in too asshole!". Just shake your head while muttering "pussy" and turn your face back to the stage.

By the way, that lightning bolt was the mighty Zeus commanding you to dork out and have earplugs in 24/7 wink

Loudest band in the world!

It was long thought that hearing loss was a mechanical process. In the nineties, it was found that it's biochemical. I read this article in Wired recently about an anti-oxidant that greatly reduces damage when taken before exposure to loud sounds.

guess i outta clarify... what i meant was i never wear earplugs and never have, and thus about 1/4 of my hearing is gone at age 20. lightning bolt, being the loudest band ever, were just an example...
that said, now that you mention it, i actually WOULD make fun of people for wearing earplugs while wearing them myself, because hanging out with people like HER has actually turned me into enough of an asshole to where i would think that was hilarous. muhahahaha!!!
