Thanks for that, Joebill. Not to give Faron Young and Ray Price short shrift, but Ernest Tubbs, Leon Rhodes and Buddy Emmons ... can't get much better than that. smile

My dad would tell stories about crawling out on the roof of his parent's house with a series of extension cords, and their nine tube Philco radio to pick up WSM and the Grand Old Opry on summer evenings, listening in awe to the music, and watching in awe the stars.

Don't forget Buddy Holly, someone who gets overlooked.
And Chuck Berry.
And Ricky Nelson is one of my favorites.
Yah Elvis and anyone from Sun Records.
My dad was supposedly a big John Denver fan. I dunno if that counts. puke

There are also some great young country acts out there now. they just don't get played on the radio so no one knows about them. Even though they are WAY better then the shit on the radio. Try Dale Watson, Wayne Hanckock, JB Beverley and the Wayward Drifters, Tom VandenAvond, and Scott H Biram. Just a few of my favorites.

I just did a show this past Saturday in NJ with Wayne "The Train" Hancock, I gotta say he's the real deal! I've also done shows with Scott H Biram, The Weary Boys and the Bastard Son's of Johnny Cash in the past.

Do check out Charlie Feathers' music. He was recording in the 50s-60s and did some great stuff in both the C&W and rockabilly genres. It tends to be kind of raw, and sometimes dark, very powerful though.

Also, Skeeter Davis from the same period, at heart a country singer though she did some crossover pop stuff too...

I love this thread!

One of my favorite newer bands with an older sound is Old Crow Medicine Show:

They're a little folkier/bluegrassier but soooooo good!

Don't forget the Red Headed Stranger... back in the 60s Willie Nelson was doing some incredible songwriting, along with Kris Kristofferson.

YOu've been schooled. There is a lot of fantastic suggestions here. Now, Merle, Johnny Cash and Hank William are like my holy trinity. Here I will give you a video of Merle singing Jimmy Rogers, one of the very first recorded 'Hillbilly" artists from the 30s. One to combine the Southern White and Black musical traditions, the way Hank would later.

After a monster hit with Okie from Muskogee, in the late 60s Merle released a double album of him singing Jimmy Rogers. Absolutely fantastic, but the rednecks didn't buy it and the longhaired folkies didn't buy it either. But it was re-released a few years back by Koch (I do believe)

This will also get you into some more good youtube territory (makeminecountry)

All great bands; I've been into this sort of stuff for years, and love it. Somehow or other it really touches my soul! I've had the honor of seeing the Bastard Sons live in the past.
Might I also suggest JB Beverly and the Wayward Drifters, as well as Joey Allcorn! Seen both of them, and, once again, utterly awesome.

Get down with some Arthur Alexander. He managed to mix country and R&B back in the 60's in a most excellent way.

I just joined a few minutes ago, this thread pushed me over. I didn't see any recomendations for Roy Oribison. Also for newer Country Artists there's Sarah Blackwood (frontwomen for The Creepshow)solo project Way Back Home, Nick 13 (frontman for Tiger Army) is making a solo album but you have to hear the couple of songs he has on his myspace page, and of course there's Devil Doll all three are amazing.
