Here are a couple of musicians you may enjoy.

Roy Acuff
Patsy Cline
Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys
Jimmie Rodgers (one of my Dad's favorites)
Ray Price
Marty Robbins
Jim Reeves
Chet Atkins

Many of the Hee-Haw cast happened to be excellent C&W musicians - Buck Owens and Roy Clark were both outstanding guitar players, and both Gran'pa Jones and Stringbean played one hell of a clawhammer banjo.

I'll agree with everyone that Belly Jack said. Jerry Lee Lewis also did some good country during the '60s. Don't forget George Jones, either. I'm sure I'd be able to think of some more if I wasn't slightly drunk.

Don't worry; George Jones was too. Except replace "slightly" with "roaring."
___

Don't forget the Carter family, though they might be a little early for this discussion.

But Lefty Frizzell, Carl Perkins, Merle Haggard.

I could actually listen to Country music, if it had stayed the way it was. My dad loved it and I grew up listening to some great Country singers. Most of the songs that come out now are dumbed down, processed redneck pop, no better than the average Britney Spears tune. Impossible to listen to in my opinion.

Waylon Jennings
Willie Nelson
Hank Williams

I love that period; in fact, when I first got into country music, it was that period that really grabbed my attention.
I see you're from Milwaukee; you should check out Milwaukee's very own country superstar from the 40s and 50s; Peewee King!

Here is Peewee King's group singing their hit "The Tennessee Waltz". Although Peewee was the head of the band, the singing duties usually went to Redd, although in THIS video its actually Peewee doing the singing of their theme song "Slowpoke"

Like the Pee Wee video. The slightly crackly sound makes it sound even better and the painting in the background is funny.

There are also some great young country acts out there now. they just don't get played on the radio so no one knows about them. Even though they are WAY better then the shit on the radio. Try Dale Watson, Wayne Hanckock, JB Beverley and the Wayward Drifters, Tom VandenAvond, and Scott H Biram. Just a few of my favorites.

I recommend Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, the purveyors of the Bakersfield Sound (once considered the Nashville of the West!).

Any Buck or Merle record pre-1980 is a great choice. Here are a couple of great records if you are interested -

I like a lot of this music for sentimental reasons. When I was a young boy I spent a lot of nights and weekends with my rural widowed grandmother who kept her radio on an old country station 24 hours a day.

I hated it for the longest, but now when I hear it - it makes me think of her and those times.

I love all of that stuff now Jimmie Davis, Johnny Horton, Hank Sr., Patsy Cline, etc...

Glad to see a mention of Lefty Frizzell in here. So amazing.

I'd add Claude King. Wolverton Mountain is a long-time favorite of mine.
