I love the first couple of Smashing Pumpkins albums.

They were (and still are) excellent. After them, my interest waned, and I moved on. The band have always had their hardcore fans though, through both good times and bad.

So it's nice to hear that Billy Corgan is rewarding their loyalty, with his intention to charge fans for access to his video blog

What do you do when all the other original members quit your band leaving you to soldier on like a zombie, recording new music under the same name? Well, if you are Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, you charge your fans money for updates.
Smashing Pumpkins have announced plans for a new subscription service, with subscribers receiving neither new songs nor old ones, but video updates from the studio. For $40 (£27), fans will be entitled to 12 weeks of access, and at least 25 minutes of "updates" will be posted each week. Footage will be shared within 24 hours of being recorded, and eventually assembled for a "substantial art film", according to the official website.
"I am excited to make this offer to anyone who might be interested in what goes on behind the wizard's curtain," Corgan wrote. "It is my goal to far exceed the normal documentary process and use the moment to create something that invokes synchronicity, electricity and faith into a moment that is ever unfolding."

40 dollars. Or 27 pounds in real money. Not pretty, really. Not even for a peek behind the "wizard's curtain".

Wonder if there'll be many takers?

ahaha.

"Wizard's curtain"? I'd better get a peep show at those prices.

I know the economy is rough and all, and I've heard of "sellout" before but this is beyond me.

Maybe ol' Billy is better off doing it for free, that way he can attract his original fan base back, because he sure as hell hasn't found a new one.

I'd actually be interested in seeing this myself and it could possibly even lead to a record sale, but sorry Billy, it's the economy. Everyone is hurting.

For me it depends on what the content will be. As someone who is very interested in what goes on in a studio it could be worthwhile if it was semi-educational and they talk about what equipment they use, the way they do things and why they do them that way.

If it's just going to be the usual promotional stuff then I can't see them getting many takers.

Smashing Pumpkins were my favorite band in High School, but there's no way in hell I'd pay for this.

Have any of you, by chance, seen the nature of his MySpace postings or otherwise self-serving internet ramblings? All of them ended with this snotty, threat that if anyone DARED to publish his brilliant words without his permission then they would live to regret it. Not that such behavior really surprises me, though.

Billy, nothing you said was that great or that profound. Nor will any of your video blog posts be nuggets of profundity. I'm sorry to deflate your towering ego.

Stick to music.

He should pay his fans $40 to watch his video blogs.

I was just coming here to start a thread about Billy Corgan ruining his career and losing his mind.

So, I expect Billy Corgan's next album will probably be a collaboration with Ludacris.

$40? Does this include a ticket to get on a time machine to go back 15 years to when he was relevant?
