I was driving home from a night on the down while listening to "Staring at the sea". It's a great compilation. I was torn when my passenger asked "What do you prefer? Older or newer Cure music?" I asked him to please elaborate and he said that after the "Wish" album, Robert and the boys seemed to have lost their flare. I love a lot of their work but I have to agree that the music before 'Wish' was better. Any one elses thoughts?

I agree with him. I prefer "Wish" and everything before it.

I do the same thing with Depeche Mode. I listen to everything from "Violator" back. They lost my attention after "Violator".

i even have problems with "Wish". Disintegration was the last good Cure album. "Friday I'm in Love" --- wtf?

agreed on DM.

Okay... yes... "Friday I'm in Love" and "High" are just fucking weird. Robert should NEVER sound that happy. I do like a lot of other stuff on the album, though -- "From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea" is one of my favourite songs to dance to.

Hahaha that song is great. It's as if he's saying "I don't want to fight, lets screw instead." love

i have to agree, FTEOTDGS is definitely my fave on the album. i don't think i've really listened to anything after that album. is it any good? it's hard to imagine it can compare with any of their early stuff.

Not at all. Both genres offer something different to each person. I just prefer pre-Wish.

Being as post-Wish consists pretty much solely of Wild Mood Swings (the worst album they've ever done) and Bloodflowers (nice effort, not enough mood) I'd have to say pre-Wish. Although Cut Here is an amazing song. I would disagree that Wish (and Friday I'm In Love / High) marked the beginning of happy Robert Smith, though. There's plenty of happy Cure songs from the 70s and 80s - The Lovecats springs immediately to mind. That's partly why The Cure are so great, because thay have something for every occasion. biggrin

'wish' was the last cure album i really liked, after that they lost something. i remember getting 'bloodflowers' after hearing it was going to be like 'disintegration', and well yes - it had the sorrow of 'disintegration', just none of the quality frown

have to say i loved the poppyness of 'high' and 'friday i'm in love', robert smiths voice manages to get across a sort of pessimistic cheeriness!

I'll agree with that, but it still sounds weird when he's happy. wink

"Friday I'm in Love" is an excellent song. I don't know what you guys are talking about. Still "Love Cats" is my favourite Cure song, so take that as you will. Sounds to me though that people don't think the quality of the music went downhill, they just don't like the subject matter as much.

What do you think about the single Robert just did on the last Blink 182?
