Maybe this is just because I'm a crotchety old music nazi, but to me hardcore punk is a separate subgenre from either punk or hardcore. Hardcore punk would be bands like Poison Idea, (old)GBH, Negative Approach, Discharge, pretty much any of the bands on This Is Boston, Not L.A. (especially the F.U.s, The Freeze, and Jerry's Kids). Punk is bands like The Damned, The Clash, Dead Kennedys, Duane Peters and the Hunns, The Briefs, The Avengers, The Weirdos, The Dils, The Smut Peddlers, and so on. Hardcore (and I mean REAL hardcore, not that lame ass screamo crap or the just as terrible metalcore shite) consists of bands like Agnostic Front, Slapshot, Minor Threat and the Dischord records roster at that time (although that stuff is bordering on the Hardcore Punk tag), DYS, SSDecontrol, and I could go on and on with all of these lists. Now, as far as starter bands to get into based on the start of this thread, I would have to say that if you like the Murphys, you should check out The Real McKenzies (Scottish Pride, motherfuckers), The Street Dogs (who claim both the original singer and drummer from the Dropkick Murphys and sound much like the old Murphys without all the Irish stuff), early Swingin Utters, The Reducers S.F., or just look up TKO Records online and checkout stuff from there especially Those Unknown (sooo good) or The Beltones (who I think win over anybody who listens to them once). If you really like Blink 182, I don't know if there's really any hope for you, but I guess we all start somewhere. For stuff with a more upbeat pop edge, check out The Buzzcocks, The Descendents, Generation X, even The Ramones since almost everything that falls under the Pop-Punk tag seems to try to sound as much like them as possible. Good luck, there's a lot of crap out there to wade through, but when you find some of the good stuff, it's all worthwhile.

Thats what I was thinking dude. I was getting all confused when people kept reccomending different bands. I thought he was asking for Hardcore so I named a bunch of Hardcore bands while other people were reccomending like Black Flag. So don't worry man you're not alone.

Ummm papercuts, I don't know what point you're talking about, but the thread asked for people to recommend hardcore punk. Several of the earlier replies mentioned that they were confused by the term "hardcore punk", so I tried to give a definition for that reason. And if you mean to imply that two bands being on the same label means that they must be the same type of band, I'm sorry, but you must be brain dead. Yes, it all falls under the heading of punk, that's why i used the term SUBGENRE, that's also why I described myself as a music nazi. Music means a LOT to me, so I get into it a little further than just slapping everything that isn't top 40 under the generic heading of "punk". SO FRIGGIN SUE ME....
