The SXSW 2009 Thread

It's that time of year again -- hordes of bands and industry folk and just plain ol' rock and rollers make their yearly march to the Mecca of music, Austin, TX.

I'll be heading down and exhibiting my posters as part of Flatstock 20. If you like rock posters, this is the place to be. They've added a fourth day this year so if you need something to do on Sunday, we'll still be in the convention center. I'll be hard to miss -- I have the first booth as you walk in.

It looks like I've scored a platinum badge this year so I may come down early and enjoy some of the Film and Interactive action as well.

I'll definitely be at this showcase!

I just did a project for Yellow Bike and they're setting me up with a bike while I'm there so I'm planning on hitting the pavement hard this year!

I'm still looking for a place to stay -- so if you don't mind a house guest that snores a bit I'd love to snag some couch space in exchange for some posters!

Who else will be there? What's your plan?

I have a hostel bed reserved, but it's looking iffy. I'd only go for SXSW Interactive/Film though, before all the hairdos and skinny jeans showed up.

At least the hairdos and skinny jeans can hold their liquor. Last time I was at interactive it was like "My First Drink!" The streets were empty by 10:30 and all that remained was the stench of thrown up redbulls.

I thought some kid was gonna cry when Posh kicked his ass at Guitar Hero.

^^^ For the record, Willie throws a backyard BBQ during SXSW and that clip is from Austin City Limits not Luckenbach.

But whatever... every year I see some epic shows by living legends (including Willie) and complete unknowns. I eat a ton of BBQ and I party my ass off.

yes. i went to one of the film making ones n the mid 90's. i also saw Elastica there... ha. talk about a non texas vibe... Brits living the Moscow on The Brazo's vibe.. i used to hit the old famous CMJ's in old boring new york every year... indie rock overdrive.

i have plenty of texas cred btw... i was born in Austin. my mom and dad were UT grads.... my father earned his PHD capturing bats under the Congress street bridge. My uncle pimped Willie's bull. AND i own a dry oil well in west texas.

Here's the real difference... and you get it i see... BBQ in Texas is a noun... not a verb.

It's going to be a pain in the ass though 'cause I have to make my way from Ireland.
Can't fly into Texas from here - It's going to be a full 24 hours of traveling.

Weird, we were just talking about some of the shows we saw last weekend.

My highlights... getting the shit kicked out of me at a Bronx show -- never a dull show from them. Driving around one night and seeing a bunch of "hipsters" partying in the street and parked the car and went inside to catch No Bunny -- that was some good shit. Katzenjammer were awesome and I caught them again at Bonnaroo and will see them again in two weeks in Germany.

It was an amazing 10 days.

I would love to go to the next one! I know soooooo many people who go every year, but its always a bunch of smelly dudes. I even have one (girl) friend who just moved to Austin. Hummmmm. Now if I can just fit it into my busy schedule .
