I wouldn't have thought they'd suck.... I mean I saw At The Drive-in like 5 times and they always killed it (diferent versions of the same songs, great stage persona, a wall of sound) I still wanna check out The Mars Volta live.

I saw them on the Latin MTV awards doing a song too, and you realize they aren't one of those bands that are just outright amazing.
The record is super slick and auto-tuned, and edited all to shit, so it doesn't surprise me that they can't pull it off live to the T. I will say that, just like every time I saw at the drive-in, they have this live presence that is really contagious.

I really do wish they would pull it off live. I'd love to see some of those changes done super tight.

i saw ATDI a couple of times. they always trashed the place. beer and broken instruments everywhere. once they broke a drum head during the third song and they just started throwing their shit behind them into the creek (outdoor show) then the bouncers tried to stop them but they just ran around getting chased. i think they are there to please themselves more than anything which is fine by me.

hi I'm new.

thought they were getting too self-indulgent when they did the Defacto record, haven't seen them as Mars Volta yet,

That doesn't surprise me, the record seems like something that could really only be done in a studio, very few really progressive bands can pull off their style on stage, so they generally don't try.

from what i saw of ATDI, they tended to stretch out a 5min song to about 10, but that's good and bad. Bad as you get less songs in a set/Good you get the great jammin that comes with their live music
but can't wait to seem em on BDO tour here in jan/feb

I loved seeing Mars Volta live... but then again I dug the post-prog-rock-(insert other adjective) wanking.

Holly, I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but maybe the Mars Volta wasn't as good as you'd expected since their "sound manipulator" O.D'd not too long ago...but sometimes bands just have "off" nights.

Everyone is blathering about the Mars Volta right now. And it seems to have come out of nowhere. I dunno, but everything I've heard, it just hasn't done much for me.

Anyone interested in saving me from a Volta-less existence? Suggest me some shits.

I've said it before, this isn't the first time.
Some people say that it's just too much. That songs just mesh together and there is no clear "beggining and end".
Personally, I'm into King Crimson so I could probably handle it, but still it sucks if they don't play the regular stuff...

my suggestion? listen to sparta, because thats where all ATDI's pop sensabilities went. that is if you don't like the proggyness, but kinda like the same sound. they both (not suprisingly) sound like variations on ATDI.

I saw them open for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and thought it was the most painful experience of my life (and I've had rectal surgery - TWICE!!! :blackeyedsmile.

While I don't expect a band to sound just like their records when they play live, I do expect a little cohesiveness and a point to a jam. Perhaps someday I'll check out their studio stuff, but for right now I'll pass.

i saw them once and it didn't blow me away, but it wasn't horrible. i thought the album was pretty bad, though there were a couple decent songs on it, and i really liked the EP. it definitely doesn't live up to ATDI, but i dont really think its supposed to. and i dont like sparta at all.

I don't really like Mars Volta (the songs don't go anywhere). I don't really like Sparta (too bland). I loved ATDI. I think the Mars Volta guys didn't let the music get too poppy and obvious while the Sparta guys didn't let the MV crew get too pretentious and take themselves so seriously. A new ATDI CD would really hit the spot right now. Nobody has filled the gap they left.

Yeah they suck live, but they don't care. I've heard them say that if you want to hear a perfect sounding show, buy the CD - but if you want raw rock, check out the live show.

Same with at the drive in - some noisy shit when I saw them - but so high energy it was great!
