village green's probably the best, but you can't really go wrong with any of 'em.

Village Green is great. Check out Something Else and Arthur. Those are the one's that came out right before and after it. Arthur's my personal favorite. There's also a singles compilation out there that has all of their singles from their debut through 1970 that's really, really good and has a lot of stuff not on the albums.

just invest in a discography. there's a couple but i say get "ultimate collection," it's a 2 disc set, it has everything you want, you can't go wrong.

There is a label called Castle Communications that put out ALL of their 60's albums on CD with up to 10 bonus tracks each.......I have 'Face To Face' 1966 and 'Arthur' 1969 (Village Green has the entire mono and stereo versions on the CD) ....I also have an LP of 'Muswell Hillbillies' from 1971 and an import LP called 'Are Well Respected Men' (40 songs!) Check e-bay or any used record shops in your area...... Good Luck!

I second the votes for 'Something Else' and 'Muswell Hillbillies'. Two very different albums that both have a lot to offer. Also, I'm not normally a tribute album fan, but the Kinks one that came out on Sub Pop a couple years ago was great.

Haha, I was just looking at Kinks CDs this week. I was figuring on buying Kinks Khronicles to check things out.

I owned a few Kinks albums when I was a teen. I didn't really like any from end to end, but they have some good songs on most of 'em... sorry if that's kinda vague. Saw them live three times as a teen, too. They were pretty damned great back then, 1985-86.

thanks you guys. this is very helpful, i hate guessing, and for the most part i trust the musical recommendations of my fellow SG'ers over what some reviewer on amazon has to say.

One note- don't buy the shitty US versions of the 65-71 kinks records- they kinda suck. The UK reissues sound great and have tons of B-sides and stuff.

Oh, and if you like Village Green, get the 33 1/3 book about the album by Andy Miller. A decent read about the making of the record.

Because "Till The End of the Day" is a great retread of "You Really Got Me," but without you having heard it in 14,253,796 television commercials.

I've been really partial to Muswell Hillbillies lately..

I don't recommend it to anyone trying to "get into" The Kinks because it's pretty different from a lot of their stuff... therefore not an accurate representation of their work..., but if you already like the kinks, it's a great album to have...
