May have to watch The Last Waltz today.

Now with Robbie Robertson having quit in '76, Richard Manuel killing himself, Danko dying from apparent dragon-chasing lung disease, it's down to Levon Helm (who's got some serious throat cancer going on) and Garth Hudson.frown

Soon only Garth may remain in The Band from the Classic Era.

I'd love to see Robbie get back with Levon & Garth once before it's too late.

I think Levon beat the throat cancer a little while back.

t's true he DID sing recently for the first time in years at the Allman Brothers' Wannee Fest way up upon the Suwannee River, so hopefully he did - before that he could barely speak.

Surprised all the coke Robertson and Scorsese did in the 70s didn't kill Both of them off.

glad it didn't

My favorite band lp is still Northern Lights Southern Cross. Yeah big pink and the band were good bit NLSC has an emotional core that is heartbreakingly beautiful. Plus it has Acadian Driftwood which is my fav song by them...

'Up on Cripple Creek' was burned into my brain as a boy, and can probably sing it without hearing a note of the song. Roll myself a joint and watch 'The Last Waltz' the way the audience was viewing the show. Yeah, The Band kicks ass.

Levon Helm released an album this year, which is really really good.

I've been listening a lot to Tombstone, the unreleased album (sans Robbie). Some heavy shit there. They were dealing with a lot and I get goosebumps sometimes listening to it.

Kinda like when I hear Richard Manuel's last performance of "Oh, you don't know The Shape I'm In!"

He sounds like he was in his Death throes singing it, like he knew in a couple daze he's be hanging.

*decides he can't deal with so much Death all around and logs off indefinitely*

You've got to admire a band that can make a song about the aftermath of the French and Indian War so damn powerful.

i love it, up to a point. a very specific point - the appearance of the ridiculous feather in bob dylan's hat.

i'd much rather have had more ronnie hawkins, or some of the songs that were chopped / not filmed than that whole gaudy dylan 'finale'

and yes, the last waltz suite version of ''the weight'' with the staples singers is just about the best thing ever.

i had too many hippy nightmare scenarios with being stuck opening for bands who did covers of "The Weight"... i finally shook that about ten years ago and am with "THE BAND" now.

I also love it, but I've always found the studio bit sort of jarring in the middle of all the great live footage. But "It Makes No Difference" never fails to send chills up my spine. Danko is unbelievable in TLW as both instrumentalist and singer. He's really fun to watch in "Festival Express," also!

Levon Helm is currently on tour. And he has been hosting shows up at his barn in Woodstock, NY for years now.
