i got it all wrong?i thought, in my mind at least, "punk" was all about being primative , angst ridden and aggressive? i think it funny, that a "hardcore" band that despised the glam, arena rock type shit, has become exactly what it stood against...... and you people paid $30 to join a fan club? whatever . i guess your bigger fans than i ever was.
out of curiosity, what was the first AFI albumn you bought or heard? and what did AFI stand for at the time?

My friend bought Answer That when it first came out.. gave it to me to listen to, and I laughed at how "punk rock" this band was trying to be. It was almost pathetic.
Then Very Proud came out, and I still wasn't a fan. Shut Your Mouth came out, and I started to get into them. They were changing their sound (much for the better), and that was cool. Then they put out Black Sails, and there was no way I couldn't love them. That is one of the best cd's of all time to me. And since then, I've loved them as much as ever... but still cannot listen to the boring, primitive, bland, "punk rock" that is Answer That.

I know your type. Typical "old school" AFI fan (most of whom didn't even get into AFI until atleast Black Sails). Your the kind of guy who was "into" a band while they were punk, cause you are too (but you'll never say that, cause that would be uncharacterist of a punk rocker). But then the second when a band changes their sound... you say any, and everything about them that would indicate that they "sold out", but you'll never say it.

But please, I'd love for you to inform me when AFI said they were so "anti-glam".. as I've read numerous interviews of Davey Havoks... and none of them even hint at disliking glam. In fact, some of his favourite songs/bands that he mentioned in the interviews are by glam bands, or bands that have a glam look to them. And AFI's never really called themselves "punk rock", the closest they get to that was "East Bay Hardcore" (which they still call themselves).

As to the punk being angst ridden, primitive, and agressive... listen to the new cd. There is still angst, it's still very much so aggressive.... but they do it with intelligence, and without sounding like every single other "punk" band that is out there right now.

I think it's great that you have such a great dislike for the new AFI. That's less of your type of "punk rockers" at a great show. And while you stay at home, listening to the boring bland, punk rock of AFI's yesteryears... the rest of the world (AFI included) will evolve into something bigger and better. Maybe you were just too busy listening to Answer That & Stay Fashionable to notice the slow growth that AFI has been going through in their career... but that's hardly the bands fault.

I don't see the Cult comparison. I think their new stuff is veering closer to Alkaline Trio territory.

number one, paco, you don't know what "type" i am.
and what you think is my type, is what got the band to the point they are at today.

number two, i like a lot of bands that have changed their sound over the years, take the misfits, they went from straight ahead punk, to a horror inspired, 50's influenced sound, to leaning towards thrash or harcore in the end. and how NOFX has change a bunch.

number three, i hope the guys do well, i just think they ar ebecoming something they never shoul have. i've told them so in person. i do not like the new record at all. i don't like "black sails", i do however think "..art of drowning" is great.
apparently we just have way different tastes in music and outlooks on things. you didn't like their old stuff, i did. so cool your jets kid. lets see how you feel about some of your favorite bands in 8 or 9 years.
number four, learn when someone just likes to argue. it's all fun.smilebiggrin
ps. when you see us "old skool punk rockers" in the pits at the shows, try not to pummel us with the "death blossom" dance you kids do.biggrin we're getting to old for that shit.

While I disagree with most of Destro's points, I do have to say that this "Death Blossom" dance (i didn't know that it has a name!!) is ridiculous. I am sick of going to shows and having to make sure that I don't get dropkicked in the head!!
Moshing? Yes! Dropkicks? No!

On the other hand, I first saw AFI in '99 when they opened for Danzig/Samhain, and I was blown away. They are so much better now though. They went from the band who sounds like bad Offspring, to the band that loves the Misfits, to AFI.

And the Hard Rock show? Well obviously the show had 30min. and it played the songs that would sell the record. I saw them this go-around again, and I did think it was a great show. They really got the "rock-star" thing down. Some people may like it, some may not. I for one do, although I could do without the aformentioned dance.

I'm another one here from the DF.
And I'm with Em, I'm a little too obsessed.

I don't get why people are all whiney about AFI "going soft" and "selling out". Sing the Sorrow is an excellent ablum like all the rest. And in case anyone hasn't noticed, AFI's style has changed throughout every album.

That's what makes them so god damn bitchin' cool.

pfftt
see, your way out of the loop. The kids call it "hardcore dancing." I, personally, think it's completely retarded. There is no need to pretend you're a ninja at a concert.... unless you're at some sort of secret ninja band's show... and they encourage you to practise ninja moves while they play...... .... but I'm 99% sure that, that isn't AFI.

I can tell you "like to argue," but most of your points were pulled out of your ass... where your head was (ie: the "glam" thing, as you had and will have, no evidence to back it up)

They're becoming something YOU don't want them to. Well, boo, fucking, hoo. Haha... seriously... just get over it. You don't like what they're becoming, don't listen to it. And it honestly boggles the mind that one could think that "Art Of Drowning" was great, while Sing The Sorrow is bad. Those two are the most similar discs AFI has ever put out. But whatever, to each their own

i just watched the "Hard Rock Live" with them on it the other night...... and what the fuck happened to those guys? where did all the hard, fast, angry songs go? i don't think they played anything from before " art of drowning". if davey from 6 or 7 years ago saw davey today, he'd slap the shit out of him and tell him to get a fuckin haircut. it just amazes me how a band can do a complete 180 like that, like metallica did to an extent, and just ignore what they once were. if that was the show i'm going to get if i go to see them now, i think i'll stay at home, listening to "answer that and stay fashionable", and relive the old " east bay hardcore" days.QUOTE]

NONONO!!!! hahah you are completely right sir. i dont care who the fuck likes them now... they sold their soul to MTV!!! i get in alot of fights about this subject with all those 15 year olds that like them. hahaha... they have been a huge dissappointment with their new album.

i think they HAVE sold out and they DO suck... but it is totally fine that you like them. i'm glad someone does... otherwise what would i have to bitch about.

You're right it is, but you're the one who's making personal attacks... while I'm making valid points about the music.
You can call me a douche all you like, and say I forgot my medicine or whatever little petty insult you want to throw my way but it doesn't matter. The fact is, if you think AFI sold out, you're wrong.
They've been making music videos for years. They've sent them into MTV. Total Immortal was played a bunch of times on MTV2, but nobody really liked them that much.

The market has changed, and now AFI has a label that is truly behind them and will push them no matter what. And finally, after all these years, punk rock is once again popular. AFI just happens to fit in with that scene, and the kids love it.

If you can't deal with it, get over it and go listen to whatever "underground" band you want to.
But before you go and bitch more, please... explain to me how they sold out... so that I can laugh at your argument some more.
