I've got this... friend whom I dearly love, see. And this "friend" is, shall we say, a little light in the loafers. I know, you'd think I wouldn't get much of that out here, but I do.

Anyhoo, what I'd like to do for this friend is to make him* a mix of great, great songs by gay artists. Now, I am NOT looking for just gay club hits. I'm looking for actual great pop/rock/rap songs by queer dudes, dudettes or others, but they do not have to be about being gay per se.

If you were charged with this task, what mix would you make? Be creative. I'm looking for ideas because the list of gay musicians I know is woefully short (for example, I just found out that Bob Mould is a friend of Dorothy. I know, I'm out of the loop.)

Well? Have at it.

*I only point the fact that my friend is a male out because I don't want any goddamned songs by the Indigo Girls. Seriously. None. Melissa Ethridge MAYBE and other lesbian song for sure, but no fucking Indigo Girls, OK?

Wait... why are you making yourself a mix tape? What?

Anyhoo, Elton John (pref. "Somebody Saved My Life Tonight")
Rufus Wainwright
Scissor Sisters (pref. "Laura")
Tegan & Sara
I'm not sure if Lou Reed counts.
Pet Shop Boys (pref. "Can You Forgive Her?")
Bloc Party (the singer is gay)
Marc Almond (pref. "Say Hello Wave Goodbye")
Judas Priest, of course

And, cough, you can find most of those artists on Music Warship. Of course.

Leonard Cohen? The original Ladies Man?

Yeah, I was running over to cast my vote for the Magnetic Fields, but it's been covered. A Pretty Girl in her Underwear is gayer than it sounds, but it doesn't get much gayer than I Thought You Were my Boyfriend.

I think Erin McKeown is gay, but I'm not sure. She's pretty great, though. La Petite Mort for a specific song.

Somewhere along the line Alan Ginsburg recorded a few tracks with Bob Dylan.

Lou Reed, of course, maybe Halloween Parade.

Wait, do you just want gay men or are lesbians okay too?

God, that question came out wrong. But I'm leaving it anyway.

For the Big Boys, maybe "In the City."

I just uploaded "Foggy Day" by Rufus Wainwright on the Warship.

I like "I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone" by Sleater Kinney, but anything off "Call the Doctor" is good.

MSTRKFRT did a really good remix of "Two More Years" by Bloc Party that I can give you.

"Could You Be the One" is my favorite Husker Du song.

Everyone is all gay and shit for "Walking with a Ghost" by Tegan & Sara.

Lesbians are always OK.

Just not the Indigo Girls.

I'm pulling mainly from the hits of a lot of these artists. But there's obviously a lot of great album material too. Items in bold are probably what I'd mix on first glance.

  • Rufus Wainwright - "Foolish Love", "Go or Go Ahead", "Danny Boy", "April Fools", "Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk", "Poses" (I would recommend pretty much anything off the S/T album and Want One)

  • Queen - "Another One Bites the Dust", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Keep Yourself Alive", "Don't Stop Me Now", "Somebody to Love", "Under Pressure", "You're My Best Friend"

  • Erasure - "Oh L'Amour", "Victim of Love", "Who Needs Love Like That?", "A Little Respect"

  • Judas Priest - "Breaking the Law"

  • Soft Cell - "Tainted Love", "Sex Dwarf"

  • Pet Shop Boys - "Opportunities", "West End Girls"

  • Bronski Beat - "Smalltown Boy", "Hit That Perfect Beat", "Why?"

  • Elton John - "Bennie and the Jets", "Rocket Man", "Tiny Dancer", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"

  • George Michael - "Hard Day", "Hand to Mouth", the aforementioned "Freedom 90"

  • Yaz - "Bad Connection", "Don't Go", "Only You", "Situation"

  • Depeche Mode - "Just Can't Get Enough", "Dreaming of Me"

  • Throw in some Magnetic Fields for good measure (others here are probably more familiar with their material)

"Walking With a Ghost" is okay. "Living Room", "Speak Slow" and "Come On" are better.

I think only the leatherman and the cop were straight. So they were 3/5ths gay? Idk, I'm good at gay people, but I suck at math.
