As this thread demonstrates, Smashing Pumpkins fans are generally split between two opinions:
1) "The band was perfect during (Gish / Siamese Dream / Mellon Collie) and everything after that is different, and does not appeal to me."
2) "Billy Corgan's writing has evolved over the years, and I still like it."
Personally, I'm in the latter group. I was initially disappointed by Adore, but I've come to realize that there's a Smashing Pumpkins album for every mood, and if you put the wrong one on you'll hate it. Conversely, if you put the right album on, you're set. Today it's rainy and cold, and I'm stuck cleaning and working from home -- definitely an Adore day, or maybe Twilight to Starlight.
I think the split happens between Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie, personally.

A split, yeah.
Heh, yeah, worded that badly.

Mellon Collie ruined them for me. What should have been their masterpiece was stretched into a pretentious, filler-laden boondoggle of a double album.

does anyone know if SP has a warm up act on their europe tour? Im going to see them the 29th of feb and I cant find info on it aaaanywhere!
I guess they won't have a supporting act. They didn't have it when they toured this summer (although they made an exception here in Sweden where I saw them).
It's only a month from now that I will see them again, can't wait!!
Zeitgeist was pretty good, but I still prefer their earlier stuff. Last October, I finally had the chance to see them live. Amazing show! I remember when they split up back when I was in High School. I was so bummed, thinking I'd never get to see them. I'm so glad I got the chance.
Seeing them in April... *drools*. I saw Billy solo in '05, it's such a moving experience just to be in the same room as him. I'm waiting on the Adore tracks myself...

Can't wait to see them in Dublin next weekend
Im seeing them 29 feb. but I want to know who the warm up act is!!!!
I'm seeing them on Saturday, I'll let you know who (if anyone) they have... They didn't have anyone supporting when they played their own shows here before, but then they did a 3 hour set... My ticket says 'Plus Special Guests'...
The band had started to break down by Machina. There were personal tensions, and it seemed like there wasn't as much passion or edge as there once was.
To be perfectly honest, I haven't listened to Zeitgeist. I'm scared to buy anything with the U.S.A. flag on it these days. Or anything I know is going to be politically slanted. Either it's going to be angry, faggy, and blindly-patriotic, or retardedly rebellious. A Perfect Circle's eMotive sucked. NIN's With Teeth and Year Zero sucked.
I couldn't bear the thought of listening to "The Smashing Pumpkins Do American Idiot"
I should really grow the balls to do it, but I think I'd just spend the whole time comparing it to Gish or Mellon Collie, and be sadder than ever before.
I dunno.
I could never get into those guys and the main reason was Billy Corgan's voice.
The music was never half bad, but not my cup of tea. They're certainly all talented musicians and I can always respect that do a degree, although I don't respect the way I've heard Mr. Corgan treats his fans.

That's what I thought, too... Still not bought it... Having said that, based on the songs I've seen them play live, there's some pretty good stuff on there, probably better than Machina at least... Doomsday Clock and United States in particular are really good...
They played Mayonaise and Drown last night, which I really wasn't expecting, so right now I'm pretty fucking happy with The Smashing Pumpkins... They encored with a cover of Echo and the Bunnymen's Lips Like Sugar, too
I think I own Siamese Dream, but I've never really been able to get into the Pumpkins. Same thing with Sonic Youth, I just never had the patience to "get" it.
I just bought this and I was disappointed. I thought Corgans voice was over-done at times and some of the lyrics seriously made me wince (We are! We are starz!) I liked some songs on it like For God & Country but over all I think I like their earlier stuff better actually. It's not Corgan is bad now, he's still a good artist it's just that he's not releasing anything that seems great or really memorable.
Well, Mellon Collie was the greatest Pumpkins effort for me. Every song on that album was, at one point or another, my favorite song so I don't really get the filler comments. But to each his own.
Basically, they lost me at Machina. I liked a lot of stuff on Adore but I would not now nor did I then consider it equal to their previous releases. It was good, not amazing.
Machina was... well, there were maybe 3 worthwhile songs on it. Everlasting Gaze, Stand Inside Your Love and Glass & The Ghost Children. The rest was crap.
After that I fell out of love. I discovered new bands and haven't bought anything since. My two friends, who I successfully converted to Pumpkins fanatics, kept trying to convince me to get all the new stuff. Machina 2, Untitled, Rotten Apples, Zwan, Zeitgeist... pass on all of it. They played it all for me, over and over, as I'd hang out with them and never once did I find anything I liked.
Except the song "Saturnine". That was cool.
And now Billy talks about the Virgin Mary all the time. Frankly, I think he lost his mind after Adore. Falling out of the spotlight was just too much for him.
