What did you think about Zeitgeist ?

I loved it but my favorite cd of all time is still Adore.
I'm really happy SP is back

I like Zeitgeist, but I favor the older albums more. It's hard for me to choose a favorite between Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie, and Adore. But if I HAD to, I would have to go with Adore. I can't see myself making it without Ava Adore, Crestfallen, and Pug.

Side note: I can't wait for tomorrow night (Halloween). I am going to their concert in Atlanta! biggrin

Dammit! The Halloween show was cancelled! frown

Jimmy Chamberlain was admitted to a hospital yesterday for chest pains, so both Atlanta shows were cancelled. I hope it's nothing serious.

the mission hipster irony over the week that album came out was off the charts.

on topic: i like it. it felt a bit like machina, but billy cranked down the shimmery pop and turned the siamese dream / mellon collie guitars back up.

Sorry to report that those are probably the Pumpkins' two worst albums. That being said, Zeitgeist was alright but, sadly, had the unmistakable feeling of desperation.

Zeitgeist is pretty good but I just can't deal with Billie's shitty singing voice anymore.

smashing pumpkins. . . . ah yes.

gish was fucking perfect - their purest album, and one of the best albums of the nineties, siamese dream was great, a classic, mellon collie was great but occasionally patchy and spoilt by billy's blossoming pretension, adore was pure instantly forgettable shite and everything since has been utter tosh.

smashing pumpkins were basically great, up til the point billy shaved his head and started dressing like uncle fester from the addams family.

then they just got kinda boring, pretentious and self-imitating.

wow! Im suprised no one likes Adore and Machina!

I was a little dissapointed with their new cd but I bought it just to support him. I felt something was lacking in the riffs and how his voice was too loud in the songs

but GISH indeed is another great cd smile

Smashing Pumpkins is one of my favourite bands! I've got the "SP-heart" tattooed as a part of my sleeve.

Zeitgeist is an OK album. I really like a few songs like "Doomsday Clock", "Bleeding the Orchid".

MCIS though is one of the top ten albums ever IMO!

Adore has some beautiful, beautiful songs on it... To dismiss it as shite is overstepping the mark... I hated it on first listen, simply because it was such a change from their previous work, but To Sheila, Blank Page and For Martha are as strong as their earlier output...

I've still not listened to Zeitgeist on record, but live, the songs have mostly sounded good - a couple are less engaging, but some, like Doomsday Clock and Bleeding the Orchid I like a lot... Their 3 hour show at Hammersmith Apollo was just downright awesome...

personally I like Pisces Iscariot. "Whir" "Landslide" and "Blew Away" always make me feel good, but there's very little I don't like about the album. I sometimes struggle to listen to their other albums right through.
I look forward to hearing Zeitgeist (I'm a bit behind the times, lol) smile

Mellon Collie ruined them for me. What should have been their masterpiece was stretched into a pretentious, filler-laden boondoggle of a double album.

+1

I have the SP heart tattooed on my arm, so everyone has been asking me about fucking Zeitgeist. My answer? I haven't purchased a single SP album since I got the tattoo in 1996...aaand the trend continues. Sucked for me that immediately after declaring my allegiance in a really permanent fashion they stopped releasing quality material.

An important lesson learned at the ripe age of 18!

As this thread demonstrates, Smashing Pumpkins fans are generally split between two opinions:

1) "The band was perfect during (Gish / Siamese Dream / Mellon Collie) and everything after that is different, and does not appeal to me."

2) "Billy Corgan's writing has evolved over the years, and I still like it."

Personally, I'm in the latter group. I was initially disappointed by Adore, but I've come to realize that there's a Smashing Pumpkins album for every mood, and if you put the wrong one on you'll hate it. Conversely, if you put the right album on, you're set. Today it's rainy and cold, and I'm stuck cleaning and working from home -- definitely an Adore day, or maybe Twilight to Starlight.

I think the split happens between Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie, personally.
