Your task is this.

Think of a band or artist where you can't possibly imagine what sort of has-no-life sod would be so interested in them as to set up an actual fan page on the web.

I mean, there'll be Avril fan sites a-plenty made by obsessed teenie girls, and there'll be Nick Cave sites and White Stripes sites and Autechre sites by those whose hipness is tied up in their love of these artists.

But there are some artists so geeky -- some who sell many records because they're easy listening, but you can't imagine anyone actually caring about them -- that you'd wonder who would devote the hours needed to build and maintain a site to worship the boringest bands around.

Here are my offerings.

Mike and the Mechanics. I mean, who in their right mind would give a flying turd about Mike and the Mechanics, a band whose name says all that needs to be said about their spectacular ability to be dull. I mean, even before that, Mike Rutherford was, like, the dull one in Genesis. confused Well, Chrischa Van de Voorde apparently loves this rockin' band.

(Apparently so too do these musicians, who have formed a MATM tribute band. I mean, I can't make shit this funny up. surreal )

Second candidate, Huey Lewis and the News. OK, so Huey has a touch more cred than old Mechanical Mike. His early band backed early Elvis Costello, and his early self toured with early-ish Thin Lizzy. But "Do You Believe In Love" was in some quarters considered a hanging offence of a song, and you still have to wonder, who would care enough about him to bother? Well some do. I mean, they have actual HL&TN fans.

Funny old world.

Your picks. smile

Well I found my old childhood faives Platinum Blonde , I love the name of their newest band member : juice> LOL
heres their Unofficial website , yes you arnt imagining things, 42,000 losers have viewed this page.
Oh and the 2nd most hit page when you type in Platinum Blonde is Granny Parts
Enjoy.

Okay I am going to include Foetus
becuase this bands CD's are so hard to find in ANY music store indie or mainstream, that I thought maybe the band has a purely local scene,
Good music though so this doesnt really count.

Hmmm this is harder than I thought, though I am surprised that anything 80's has fansites(save the Violent Femmes and few others notables I guess), Yup even Heart has a Official fansite.
Who woulda cared?

The Fixx. I mean, come on, the Fixx? Two x's?
Fan site: http://byrneweb.com/Fixx/
Mailing list (!): http://www.thefixx.org/

Also, Dan Fogelberg. As in, "Does that mean I can sue Dan Fogelberg for turning me into a pussy during the 70's?"
Fan site: http://www.treehouse.org/fogelberg/
Fan site titled "Dan Fogelberg: The Living Legacy": http://www.thelivinglegacy.net/

I promise never to question people's musical devotions again.

Oh, and a friend of mine's cousin used to be president of the Rick Springfield fan club.

Hmmm are you talking internet?
I am stil ratther hesitant to download music, especially from Indie bands I will never be able to help support through the concert scene.(I live in Calgary, which is reaaaaally far away from London were he is based in).
CD's are the only medium I know to help support such a great concept like foetus.
To this date I have only been able to track down one album/ that was "Blow" a remix of Flow by various DJ's.
The song that introduced me to Foetus was J.G. Thirwel's contribution to the Melvins "The Crybaby" (JGT does "No Disgrace" amazing album amazing song).
And beleive me I have been looking.

My friend (mostly jokingly) has made a Yanni tribute site. I don't have the address handy right now though. Suffice to say, it's fucking scary.

Well, I did wonder who'd get excited about this band, but apparently people all over Europe are interested in multilingual Roxette

The genius Dan Fogelberg selection (does anyone remember Opus the Penguin from Bloom County talking about Dan Fogerberp?) brought to mind, in the words of the website, "one of classic rock's most pleasant sounding duos", England Dan and John Ford Coley. It's not really a fan site as such, but it is one of the internet's most pleasant looking webpages.

i wasn't talking about downloading music...you should be able to order his Foetus stuff online from places like CDnow.com ( puke ) ......No Disgrace is my favorite song off that album, love the lyrics also you live closer to Mr. Thirwell than you think, he's based out of NYC and hasn't lived in Engalnd since the mid 80s wink

edited to add: you couldn't support him through the concert scene anyway snice he dosen't tour very much and the last one he did do was a double bill with Coil in 2001 at the Royal Albert Music Hall (i think that's the name) in London

CD now you say eh?
Should I be afraid to ask why they get such ravishing reviews from you?
As for faivourites from the Crybaby, I would say I am equally fond of Mine is no disgrace, Blockbuster(with David Yow), G.I. Joe (with Mike Patton) and to lesser extent Divorce (with Tool) and the man with the laughing hand is dead (with Bliss Blood)., and both of Hank 3rds songs........so ya thats like 75% of the album.
The albums like the Ideal mix tape, custom made from some of your faivourite artists.

As for Mr Thirwells home.....damnit dont they ever update his fansite.
Thats where I was getting my info from.
Though his move only cuts 3000 miles from my 10,000 mile trip.......
Oh well at least I will be able to track down some foetus CD's now.

Oooh My first concert topic reminded me of this now obscure Canadian popstar in the 80's(thought to be truthfull he had some hits in the early 90's unlike most popstars who came out in the 80's)
I bring you Gowan, now part of Styx (hehe)
