Isn't it worse somehow when someone who used to be cool turns lame? Michael Bolton is one thing, but when someone used to be a badass and then they turn into a hideous insipid monstrosity, it's sickening.

So who sports the widest gap between how lame they turned out to be vs. how cool they were?

My votes:
Rod Stewart
Michael Jackson

Ooh, and an interesting postulation: Who that is cool now do you bet will turn out to be lame in the future?

this is a little off topic but I just now heard this:

did you know michael jackson is worth 500 million dollars?

It just seems like a sad reflection on our society that the biggest nut-job on earth is allowed to have that much money.

What's worse is that a lot of that money comes from the biggest nut job on Earth owning the rights to the Beatles' music. That's the only thing I hold against M.J. mad

Guessing who isn't going to be cool in the future is tricky, seeing that most musicians these days don't have a very long shelf life.

Here, here. What a dickhead. But then, it could be worse. He has allowed the release and rerelease of their stuff. I mean, he could be a total dick and just save it all for himself. This sounds crazy, but we are talking about Micheal Jackson here. It's shitty that the guys who made some of the most important music in R'n'R history don't even have the rights to it. For shame.

Actually the Beatles still have the rights to THEIR versions of their songs. They have control of the master recordings.

What they don't have is the publishing rights. That's why when you release a Beatles cover, the money goes to Jackson. And if you hear a cover version of a Beatles song on a commercial it goes to Michael Jackson.

Sting is totally lame now. I was at a family get-together when the superbowl (or whatever it was) was on and Sting did this absolutely terrible duet with No Doubt. The man obviously has no self-respect left.

Common (formerly known as Common Sense)
Foo Fighters (hell, I'd have said Dave Grohl too, but he does play on the new Killing Joke, so. . .)

Metallica doesn't hold a candle to Rod Stewart in the cool/lame department. Metallica's only crime is making rock that's shittier than the rock they made before. Rod Stewart went from thirty years ago being the impossibly cool lead singer of the impossibly badass Faces, made two or three killer solo albums, and now he's making albums of lame pop standards for the Home Shopping Network/Oprah set.

No flame here, I was thinking the same thing. His music sounds the same, but the lyrics now sound like they were more heavily influenced by Hallmark than Aleister Crowley.

To prove my point on Rod Stewart, not to keep beating a dead horse, but his cool factor has been nil so long that when I play the Faces for people, they're amazed that he ever was cool. He's been lame so long that it seems ludicrous.

No flame here either, but what does "depriating" mean anyway?

All I know is that the Madonna of 10 years ago would not have turned down an interview with SG, but the current one sure did. frown
