A few I don't think anyone mentioned:

Poe - "Haunted"
U2 - "Pop" (though I think I might be the only person who thinks that album is really great)
Belle & Sebastian - "The Boy With the Arab Strap"
Juliana Hatfield - "Beautiful Creature"
Natalie Merchant - "Ophelia"
And I personally liked Pulp's "This is Hardcore" better than "Different Class"

Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs

Shellac - 1000 Hurts

Mercury Rev-Nee Bee Thousand?

Shellac-What year did Slint's SpiderLand come out? Seems like Shellac (and about a zillion other bands) stylistically owe a lot to that album, but I took it off my list after I realized it may be older than '93....

Spiderland was 1992.
Albini recorded it & i wouldn't be surprised if his input helped mold the sound, as he did with The Jesus Lizard.

well it looks like a lot of the ones i would say have been taken. i think it's funny how some people have the same bands but different albums by those bands listed.
maybe i missed it, but i didn't see anyone mention low. i really think someday there'll be some great bands who were influenced by them. not sure which album i'd pick, maybe 'secret name'. and i do believe the polyphonic spree will definitely have an impact.

Who is Kent? I've heard several members rave about them, and I can honestly tell I've never, ever heard of them before. Please recomend some tracks I can download as an introduction.

Kent are an awesome band from Sweden.
For starters you can get 'Just Like Money', 'Kevlar Soul', '747' (both Swedish and English language versions), 'Celsius', 'Protection' and 'Rollercoaster'....when you've got through them then get 'Saker Man Ser', 'Kevlarsjäl' and 'We Need To Eat'.

Truly one of the finest bands of the last 10 years, and unfortunately hardly anyone has ever heard them.
It's almost criminal...

kent are damn amazing, and your starter songs are all damn good choices, but definantly they should check out as well first - before it all ends and music non stop and elvis and actually any song, they are a fucking great band.

I was going to throw a fit that nobody had mentioned Tricky's "Maxinquaye", then I noticed they had, just not credited it. biggrin

Most of my main contenders have been mentioned already, but I don't see "So Tonight That I Might See" by Mazzy Star on anyone's list, so it can go on mine. smile

Edited to add: I'm not going to look it up, but if the Boo Radleys brought out "Giant Steps" in 1993, then it should be definitely included. And I might throw Elliott Smith's "XO" in as well.
