I mean there are times I am looking through my collection and I am like ....do I own that?...Granted I won't stop collecting music but there is simply not enough time to listen to it all..I try to only buy about 10-15 cds a week.. but still.

I recently did an inventory for insurance purposes. Over 2,100 albums and counting.

My iTunes takes up almost 32 gigs, and that's probably not even half of my collection.

So I think the answer is "yes".

If you're only getting music by pirating you're at the whim of someone else's music collection. A lot of stuff is pretty impossible to find on torrent sites. Another thing that bothers me about pirating is that the songs will quite often be misspelled or have a few tracks missing from an album, which makes no sense because if you're smart enough to put a bittorrent together it stands to reason that you'd have the tracks labeled right and have all of them on there. Anyways, the act of buying CDs, especially when you're trying to find something obscure and having to go between different record stores to locate it, is a lot of the fun of music collecting.

What's the point of buying music with that kind of frequency? How would you even have time to appreciate even half of those cds? I love music and all, but I see no reason to own music I'll never get a chance to listen to.

Not to get on my high horse, but if you find a CD or album you really like, don't you think it might be cool to reward the people who put it together by buying it?

And Trevallion is dead on: in fact, I've never met anyone who completely pirates their music collection who didn't have completely shit taste.

I think Rhapsody is the greatest thing. It's 12 bucks a month for unlimited streaming. They don't have every single album ever made, but they have a lot, even stuff you'd consider obscure. True, you don't own the tunes and if you stop subscribing you can't listen anymore. But the stuff you really really need to own you can go buy. For those spur of the moment whims you always have Rhapsody's instant access to a massive music library that takes up zero space (you're streaming, not downloading). They have really good "radio" stations too.

Thirded.

My problem is having to step over piles of vinyl every day, as my room is way too small and unfortunately i do not trust my roomies with my records. Such is the life of a vinyl junkie!

No problems . If the artists who made the music were making say half the money from the cd sale , I'd have less of a problem with paying for the cd . As it stands we all know that the record companies are the ones making the money from the sales . Maybe not so much the indie releases .
And I've been able to find a lot of things I've been looking for that I can't get , even on sites like Amazon . Groups that I've heard on internet radio who may not be from the USA so they don't have the recording released over here .

+1 more.
The only time I download from Limewire is when I am looking into an artist(s) I've never heard. This has saved me from wasting money on shit like Hot Chip. When an artist I know comes out with a new record though I always purchase it, though lately I've been buying from iTunes more than from CD's because it's usually cheaper.
And I still collect vinyl.

There is no such thing as too much music.

My collection is currently hiding out in suitcases because I have no way of properly organizing it at the moment. It makes me sad actually... I like looking at it.

Here's the thing, though: in many cases, those bands already got a bunch of money from the record company, and depend on the record company recouping its costs. I hate most record companies as much as the next person, but if a band is signed to a label and putting out good music, they've bought into that paradigm and I'm not interested in contributing to getting them cut off by their label.

Taking the "but the band doesn't see that money anyhow" cop-out shows a blinding ignorance of the reality of the music industry.

If you want them to keep putting out music, buy their music. If you're worried about supporting them with your dollars, buy their merch.

Oh, and after having my biggest book of CDs stolen out of a car a few years ago and, more recently, losing my entire digitized collection in a massive hard drive failure, I can safely say that no, my collection is not too large at all. I can also say that while I was able to recover every single song I purchased through the iTunes store, I'm still trying to recover stuff I lost when my CDs were stolen. I only buy CDs of music I can't find on the iTMS, or CDs which have packaging and/or additional content in the case that I want.

This has gotta be a generational thing. I nearly ALWAYS pay for the music I want, even if it is in download form. I want to support the people who make the music I like. Alot of kids today seem to think that music just appears out of thin air and they can just take whatever they want for free.
