I cannot stand the Smashing Pumpkins, and skimming through this article just changes my attitude about them for the worse. Haha. ELEVEN nights in a row at the Filmore? That's pathetic and hilarious at the same time.

actually i'm still looking for tickets for their SF shows. the original 8 shows sold out in ten minutes, so they added three more and those sold out in half an hour. they could probably sell out a full month here.

So it hasn't leaked fully yet, not like in the first couple weeks as different people buy all the different cd's and then upload them to P2P networks in one fell swoop all of them will be available in a nice little package. ARRR!!!

The only band that could pull that off successfully was the Grateful Dead.

and boy did they ever.

Ummm, did they go and hire a female bassist and a replacement guitarist that looks quite a bit like james iha who also plays a black les paul like iha did?

I also find that tour schedule purely fucking presumptuous. Artists have always made it to you or at least to the nearest city. With these fucks they expect you to rearrange your life and make a pilgrimage to them. What a bunch of lazy fucks. I would LOVE to see their rider. That must be a hoot.

At first I thought I was reading the schedule wrong or there was a mistake. I mean, is there really enough demand for the band to play like a week in North Carolina?

There is if you don't book any other shows on the east coast...other than Joisey. They're forcing their fans to show their hand and see how dedicated they really are. I mean for fuck's sake...not even a Chicago show???

Who is forcing anyone to buy a record four times? This is just retailers competing with each other.

Silversun Pickups suck.

Right. A band would book a venue multiple days in a row without knowing they could sell all of the tickets.

i was talking about this yesterday. they are like the new KISS. 2 members going on as the band... when the sum of the original members was much more than the individual so it's not the real band. plus this is the same shit kiss did with the kissology dvds. they know they have a dedicated fan base that will buy anything (and i think in the case of kiss and sp, even though they play immortal- they realize that time is limited and they have to milk it for all it's worth.) this is kind of funny for a band that cited the reason that they broke up as not selling as many records as britney spears. they are obviously not going to let that happen again. and now britney is bald. skull

how many times are we going to have to go over the fact that james and d'arcy didn't write any of the music except for two songs on mellon collie? the smashing pumpkins have always been defined by billy's guitar and singing and jimmy's drumming. period.

i swear this comes up in every single smashing pumpkins thread.

Doesn't matter. If you are saying Iha's playing style means absolutely nothing then you never really understood. Yes, Billy played most of the instruments on much of the material. But to just toss two of the members aside like nothing at all has changed without them is just being a Billy Corgan apologist which is kind of creepy.

right, because the pumpkins rose into the spotlight due to James and D'Arcy's brilliant songwriting and performance on their quadruple platinum second album? the music world hailed James and D'Arcy for their 28 song opus when Mellon Collie came out?

the Smashing Pumpkins are Billy Corgan (and Jimmy Chamberlain because Billy can't drum). if other members contributed to that sound, it wasn't anything major because the two tracks off their new album sound exactly like the Pumpkins -- oh wait, that was because Billy wrote and recorded the new album too wink

That James Iha solo record was really good, huh? Also, D'Arcy's musical accomplishments post Pumpkins have, likewise, been very impressive.

Actually as far as I know Iha co-wrote several songs with Corgan along with the 10 or so songs he penned himself. Is there some evidence contrary to this I'm not aware of?

I think what's going to be really funny is if this album actually turns out to be good. Egg on everybody's face here.

I really think that Tarantula is a good (not great) song.

this is true ^... and the reason it keeps coming up is not because of james's or d'arcy's talent. d'arcy was technicaly the least talented bass player of the pumpkins but she is by far the favorite (well mine at least). they were like characters. corgan obviously is the real backbone and chamberlin is an amazing drummer, but if they weren't important in the band it wouldn't keep coming up. the pumpkins were one of the most monumental bands in my teens and it was not just the music it was stuff like on viewphoria with bugg superstar and darcy's 'being in a band will make you crazy'. plus- zwan was corgan and chamberlin and it never reached the glory of the pumpkins, i really doubt that this version of the pumpkins will ever meet that point either, they could totally prove me wrong.

I'm a huge James Iha fan - I even liked the solo record(shock horror!!) and I was incredibly disappointed that James wasn't back in the band - but he's doing other tuff and he's happy so who cares?! Its so in the past now - and the new stuff is sounding awesome! I can't bloody wait to see them, and to get my hands on the new album (hmmm but which copy to go for??)

To me, its not the end of the world that D'arcy and James aren't making an appearance - its a real shame, but not the end of the world. And jeez, any decent sounding music with the potential to destroy the freaking indie revivial is welcomed by me, whoever may be at the helm. (my advance apologies and best wishes to the Arctic Monkeys and co...hall-fuckin-lujah)

anyone EVER using the word "Zeitgeist" sets off my instant pretension alarm. as much as i loved the pumpkins back in the day, i could not be less interested in the whole half-reformation and new songs. they were more or less shite after 'mellon collie' anyway, at which point corgan finally seemed to go RIGHT up his own arse. they'll never release anything as good as 'gish' or 'siamese dream' again.
