Long-haired, chest-thumping cro-magnons (read: metalheads) were given what seemed the opportunity of a lifetime this past weekend at the Download Festival when metal-band DevilDriver challenged the audience of rowdy hessians to create the biggest circle / mosh pit of all time. Observe:

Despite the relatively lame song, I'd say that qualifies as a valiant effort. However, when Roadrunner Records tried to get their 'meathead tornado' into the Guinness World Records, the stodgy old farts at Guinness went and dropped a steaming turd of logic on DevilDriver's parade.

Thank you for sending us the details of your recent record proposal for 'Largest Circle Pit'. We are afraid to say that we are unable to accept this as a Guinness World Record. Unfortunately, as there is no way you can physically define where any circle/mosh pit starts and ends, we cannot accept this as a category.

We realize that this will be disappointing to you.

I guess they'd prefer to stick to exciting records like the longest match of tennis played without shoes or rackets in Des Moines. So DevilDriver -- who are best known because their singer served time in Coal Chamber -- will have to content themselves to the knowledge that their circle pit was 'indefinably' huge, and that the Guinness World Records staff are, quite definably, pussies.

Here's another view of the pit, shot from inside the sea of sweaty limbs and greasy hair, which makes it feel like a Braveheart outtake. This clip also goes a long way to proving that if men are fed enough beer and exposed to heavy metal, they turn into cattle. Stampede!

what is it with the whole "we're a big family" notion? is that a heavy metal head thing? seems a little corny to me.

DevilDriver definiteley started the biggest circle pit I've ever seen in Vancouver last month. It was so pretty.

it is kinda vague where the pit starts and ends.

if they have video from the 'scared pussy' point of view, i think things would be clearer.

What really amuses me is that the opening picture doesn't even fit the description.

In fairness he has actually not only got the wrong picture but the wrong stereotype, we're a bunch of fascist nerds who have no girlfriends and wank off to solos. Hardcore kids are overweight cro-magnons who karate chop air and run about in circles at the drop of a hat... which is a pretty good description of the average download kid.

Seriously tho' why would you waste good money to see that, being stuck in a crowd of 5000 watching a band from at least 5-10 meters back? Thankfully with the exception of 3-4 bands Download managed to maintain it's unbroken record of being utter bolloks aimed at 14 year old Kerrang kiddies this year.

Also the author is a fine one to talk... given that he lists a Metal band in his top 10 bands and all...

Hey, don't get me wrong; I may have short hair but I love metal. I won't claim to know everything about the 8000 metal/hardcore scenes, but I love thrash, older grindcore, black metal, (many varietals of) death metal, power metal, (I used to like) metalcore, etc.

The article isn't generalizing all metalheads, as there are too many specific breeds to round with one sweeping generalization. Here I'm just poking a little fun at Devildriver fans, as that's a style of metal I don't particularly care for. If you love 'em, rad. You can watch devildriver while Im busy watching Watain dump goat skulls and blood on an audience, and we won't have to argue about the virtues of either band.

And hey, be fair, the circle pit doesn't belong exclusively to metal. Punks and skins and hardcore kids have been doing them for years too; the headline pic is just a cool looking picture relating to the central idea. Fuck all that genre pigeonholing.
