The Strokes sound like the Velvet Underground? Did I get the wrong version of Is This It that sounded different than everyone else's?

I mean, if you're going to accuse the Strokes of ripping any other band off, at least say Guided By Voices, like I did in the last thread that turned into this same discussion. biggrin

Oh, and I read some CNN blurb that said the new Strokes LP is more "new wave" than the first, whatever that means.

I'd do the world a favor and admit that my band is ripped off The Velvent Underground, dumbed it down, and converted the sound into radio-ready fodder and go off and get my own damn sound.

But first before we did anything, we'd have to have to break out the crowbars to pry the mouths of the critics and columnists of Spin magazine off of our dicks.

Bitter? Fucking hell, you and some of these other folks act like it's a crime to sound like some other band. Speaking from experience, most bands start like this:

(drunkenly) Oh, hey, you dig Kiss, too? Rad, man. Bring yer guitar over, let's jam, huh?

Are you pissed off at their commercial success? Are the Velvets so fucking sacred that NO ONE can sound like them? Fuck, man, EVERY heavy metal band sounds the same, but that seems to be ok.

I hope they put out another record that sounds however the fuck they want it to sound. They had a successful record. That entitles them to record more records. A hell of a lot of folks liked their first, man.

Do you think they'e destroying the credibility of other more indie bands? Boo-fucking-hoo.

Do you think they're posers? So fucking what?

It's absurd, man. A band has some success making a record and it's cool until MTV gets ahold of it, but now they're too hip to be cool...

Kris7, this wasn't directed at you, exactly, so, um, peace, huh? (here's two fingers at ya)

LMAO!!!!

Dude that last line was great! I was reading your post thinking 'uh oh, this might get ugly' then I saw that last part and it just cracked me up!
biggrin It's no big deal man, I appreciate you specifiying that you didn't mean it as a personal attack on me though. *Here's two fingers back at ya*

First off, I don't think it's a crime for a band to sound like another one. Secondly, I'm not pissed off at their commercial success. They have every right to put out another album,

What bothers me is what the music media says to me when band like that comes out: "silly metal-guy! stop listening to that racket and listen to [insert band name that starts with "the" here]". I respond to that with "fuck you, listen to the band(s) that your new favorite band ripped off!"

Again, I don't mind bands sounding like other bands, but The Strokes were "influenced" by The Velvets in a way that didn't sit well with me.

Furthermore, I don't think they are hurting the "indie-cred" of other bands. I don't believe in indie-nazist ideal of that band that makes it big has sold out just for doing so; though the idea of an "indie-rock" band being played on Clear Channel radio........man, the irony fetishists out there must be salivating!

peace!

biggrin

if i were the strokes, i'd record another lp that sounded good to me, release it, go on tour, let the people that liked the record buy it, then go to the shows and have a good time.
i'd also let the people that don't like it not buy it and respect their decision to choose what they want and don't want to hear.
after that, i'd continue living my dream of being a successful musician, getting paid for it, partying, dating super models, and read threads like this and laugh all the way to the bank! smile
all without even having to bathe or get a haircut.

if i were the strokes i'd save some fucking money, 'cause it's a short ride.

they're a good band, with average to good songs. they have every right to do whatever they want. the reason that they are famous, though, is that they are good looking gentlemen and know how to use the media to their advantage. parlaying that into a musical career is something i can't respect.
