What's the best place to buy music in your city?

Even though I'm in Tempe, I can speak better for my home town, Cleveland. My Generation and Wax Stacks were always the best.

in MY town there's only one, they have no selection and it's all overpriced. i can go to the mall in the next town and sunrise has a surprising amount of music i actually like. and the people there are pretty cool. or i can go to toronto and rotate this has more stuff i like, but the staff are assholes.

hahaha.. yeah, the staff at Rotate This aren't the nicest people around. but they have to deal with tourists all day.. and in order to work at a record store, you have to be at least a little snobbish. great selection & good prices.

in my town, it's the one and only Speed City Records.

a nice staff, a good selection, and no distracting attractive women.

Skunkerrific Records

They own two skunks you can pet, the receipts are just generic excel documents, and they hold live shows from time to time, using black garbage bags to cut off the stage from the cd racks. It's ghetto, but the owners are so cool, you really don't care.

Best music store I have found here in Germany is the largest retailer of electronic items. Its called Media Markt and its the evivalent of Best Buy in the states, They sell all kinds of rare and import cds I have never seen before. And almost every cd is free to listen to before you buy.

as far as selection goes, i can't think of anything better than Reckless Records in Chicago, every time i go there I always find something cool that I've never seen before, or that nobody else has.. (neat tidbit: Chris Connelly, from Ministry, KMFDM, Revolting Cocks, ad nauseam... works at the Wicker Park location.. go say hi to the bald guy w/black rimmed glasses & the Scottish accent)

I'd have to say Newbury Comics. The pain in the ass is that there isn't one at a convienient distance from me.

I would LOVE to work at a Newbury Comics: wear the clothes you want, play any music in the store be it top 40 or indie (no annoying hit singles promos being piped in like you would hear at a Strawberries), a relaxed atmosphere, and VERY friendly and effeicient staff.

I would especially like it if I was closer to the one in Boston where this hot punk chick with long black hair works there. love

If I can wax my own car for a second, my stores are constantly improving. I moved out here last year after pulling these relics from the clutches of death.
I like to think they we are more reasonably priced than Reckless and far more friendlier. Besides, support your locally owned and operated record store. The owners of Reckless live in London and San Francisco.
Otherwise, my friends at Hi Fi Records and Dusty Groove run decent operations.

Honestly I'd have to say Circuit City in Greenbriar Mall.
Its in a ghetto kinda area so they never sell out of anything I listen to, plus most of the rock cds are like 8 dollars when they first come out.

Ah...but no vinyl my friend.
I'm also biased because the owner is mean to his employees.
Oh, I forgot to mention

I'm going to go with Newbury Comics as well. The one in my town is now located where a place called Rockit Records used to be, and that store wasn't bad either, but it's been gone for a few years.

I just want to encourage everyone, for the love of pete, stay away from the huge chain stores if at all possible. The good indie stores provide better and more knowledgable service, better selection, and are usually cheaper. the towers and sam goodys of the world charge list price for cd's, while indies are usually at least a buck or two under that. you might have to pay 11.99 for a new on sale CD as opposed to best buy's 8.99 (they sell them under cost in order to get you into the store, and enough people buy appliances to make their money back), but if you want to get that small press Archie Shepp import, Atmosphere 12 inch, or Mission of Burma demo CD you are SOL. Good indie stores are more likely to have it because their staff is more knowledgeable, and if it's not in store, will likely go out of their way to get ahold of it for you, and won't take a month and a half like tower.
The big five record labels, along with the targets and walmarts of the world, are starting to cut distribution and promotion deals that would push indie music retailers out of the market, and if you care at all about music, you won't let that happen. unless the only thing you want out of a record store is for a pimply faced 16 year old to hand you a 311 cd...
If indie music retail goes (and things are starting to look pretty bad..) it will be huge loss to the music community.
SUPPORT INDIE RETAIL!
