In my opinion the best drummer of my time would have to be Dave Grohl. From the slow, melodramatic beat with Nirvana to the odd, silly beats of Queens of the Stone Age he can do anything. Very good drummer in my opinion.

dave grohl is really good no doubt. but there are plenty of better drummers of our time. Danny Carey from TOOL would get my vote for best drummer of our time (90s-00s)

What does "our time" mean? My vote goes to Keith Moon. He invented rock drumming.

This is going to turn into a pissing contest. Perhaps it already has. Why not just name your favourite drummer now playing? Then we can all just go check out the guys named instead of getting huffy over rankings.

Some of my living faves: Stewart Copeland, Elvin Jones, Idris Muhammad, Al Foster, Jim Keltner, Joey Baron, Bill Stewart, Bill Bruford, Charlie Watts, etc.

Even Ringo: the guy's sense of time is positively metronomic, and he invented the rave beat with "Tomorrow Never Knows".

Dead: Bonzo, Tony Williams, Art Blakey, Moon.

I think the guy in Tool is simply stellar too, and so is Herb, formerly of Primus.

Though I haven't listened to Dave Matthews in years, Carter Beauford is astoundingly good. His part for "Warehouse" is just brilliant.

But over all of them I'd have to hold up Brian Blade. That guy's got so much going on it's impossible to describe. If you've never heard of him, check him out right away, especially his work with Kenny Garrett.

(edited to say I also dig Grohl. I've probably air-drummed to him more than anyone else.)

Wow, I'm suprised that no one has said Mike Portnoy. In my opinion he is the most progressive drummer out there and his understanding of odd time signatures.. yeah.. somewhere close to orgasmic.

There are a lot of great drummers that are really great at doing their thing, but there aren't many that really push themselves to play different kits, styles and genres of music. I'd rate;

- Stewart Copeland
- Vinnie Colaiuta
- Neil Peart
- Mike Bordin
- Igor Cavalera
- Brain (from Primus)

Seriously, though, I can't see past the Keith Moon suggestion.

I don't know about best of 'our' time , but Brann Dailor from Mastodon (today is the day, lethargy) is an incredible drummer as well as probably my favorite.

The most tragic thing about that man is that he can still play like a motherfucker, but he chooses not to.

Well then you'd really dig Billy Cobbham of the Mahavishnu Orchestra: he's got such mastery of polyrhythms he makes the guy from Tool (who's great) sound like a warm-up drill--and Cobbham's Beauford's idol.

not to derail this but i've been listening to all sorts of john vanderslice recently and he got me back into my prog rock stuff. so last month i was enjoying 'lamb lies down' quite a bit. but questions pop into your head on an album like that, because it makes no sense. what the fuck does "i got sunshine in my stomach like i just put my baby to bed" mean?

I'm now thinking American Psycho! (although that was Genesis, wasn't it?)

"I got sunshine in my stomach..." means that Rael was feeling happy and satisfied. The Lamb is a greatly underappreciated album. People forget how incredibly creative and innovative Genesis was at this time. It is too bad they became a parody of themselves.

Still, my vote has to go to Bill Bruford. "Starless and Bible Black" and "Red" still kick major ass. Plus, Bruford played drums with Genesis on their first post-Gabriel tour and when he and Phil played together it was unbelievably fine. Ah, memories....
