I'm with you there man. Psychobilly started and pretty much finished with the Cramps. Just like synth-punk started and finished with Suicide. Bands that made their own genre.. but no one could quite be as talented as the originals.
There's a really good piece on the Cramps in the Wire a month or 2 ago. An Invisible Jukebox interview.
Like the history of punk, that's very arguable. I'm a big Cramps fan, but I believe it really started with The Meteors. Not that anyone really gives a shit though. Otherwise, if you like traditional psychobilly, check out Bloodshot Bill. He is AMAZING, and he plays guitar, bass drum and hi-hat, and sings, all by his lonesome. And it's crazy good. Also, check out The Tremors and the AlleyDukes. All three of those are pretty small bands, but I think they all have a MySpace or you can search for them on google.
There are two kinds of psychobilly fans, those who think it all started with the Cramps, and those who think it all started with the Meteors.
A few might think it started with Screamin' Jay Hawkins.
I tend to think of the Cramps as the genesis, but I don't think they consider themselves psychobilly.
I'm going to agree with you on the "two kinds of psychobilly fans...". Either way, I actually don't care. They both made amazing music and they were both original in their own right, and I'm happy as hell they both did what they did.
