i think i wouldnt have friends if i didnt play the drums! haha we are definately a hot comodity in certain areas and even more so if you really can play. i also agree with people saying drummers are a littlel off in the head too. people say that about me too . i mean i think im normal smile . for me though its a little bit of too shy to stand up in front of everyone but still want to be a part of the show. plus its a mix of thought and the physical. best of both worlds. just check out any jazz drummer.

What do you call a cross between a drummer and a musician?

A bassist.

Everyone I know either admires/aspires to be drummers. Put anyone alone in a practice room & at some point they will gravitate towards drums "cos it's easy - yer just hit things" & soon realise their foolishness. For what its worth, the drummer in my band always gets the attention during & after gigs (grrrr) while I slink into a corner unloved with my bass.(sob- or should that be S.O.B!)
BUT I once knew a v.hot girl who always ignored her guitarist boyfriend at gigs & focused instead on the bassists hands. Huzzah for rythm!

It's usually drummers AND bass players that get discriminated against. However, bass player's are a dime a dozen, and a good drummer is almost impossible to find. The drummers + bass players are the ones who have to be responsible, the ones who have to keep the rhythm, while the singer and guitar player showboat for the audience. There's a really funny skit from Kids in the Hall about bass players that I'm not going to attempt to explain. Anyone seen it?

This doesn't involve Rod Torkelson's Armada featuring Herman Menderchuk, does it?

Or is this the "JIM FUCKING MORRISON!!!" skit?

hmmmm....wouldn't know. in my experience, i haven't met anyone who harbored hostility towards drummers as if they were ther own species.
but i love them.
haven't met one i haven't likes yet, besides my boytoy is a drummer.

i think the chick factor being not too great could be due to the fact that after they are done playng, they are all sweaty and in the zone.

anyways, you know what they say about drummers in the sack: they got the best rhythm, baby.

I find that if I mention that I'm a durmmer, people don't tend to take me very seriously. Unless/until they hear me play, then they shut the hell up smile

In my last couple of bands, although I was on the drums, I was also writing most of the lyrics, arranging the riffs and coming up with the melodies for the singer (and doing backing vocals). Trouble was It really annoyed me that I couldn't control the rythym *and* front my songs at the same time!

I'm actually looking at learning the guitar properly (finally) to start a new band, but then I've got the new problem of finding a drummer who's going to live up to my own expectations... frown

Not all drummers are hyperactive and annoying either... I was the sane and grounded one in the group... Didn't do drugs and only drank occasionally

"The drummer is ALWAYS the retarded one in the band"?? C’mon now…
That's the lamest, most uncreative way of throwing your bashing on the table.
You could of come up with something a bit more downsizing.
How often do you take trips to gigs? Wait..Don't answer I think I already know.

Actually I'll have to one up you and say that was the lamest, most uncreative way of doing anything.

Just wanna state a few points

bass players are most underrated...Flea is unreal...Sting ruled...even though that puff daddy shit nearly got him killed...few others but totally bad with names...

My former band split...but the bass player and i sesson together on the reg....we get all boozed up and switch instruments..too much fun...and when we played in the band together...we were one...i totally intrusted him with the groove...and he trusted me with lead ups and fills...at times you couldnt tell the difference between the bass riff and the kick...nothing better than being in that tight virgin goove..almost total syncopated rhythm between us...good drummers are great alone...but nothing brings out a drummer more than a great bass player....hence it being a Rhythm SECTION.....hehe opnion rules...

and yea... drummers are all crazy too.. in one form or another...most primal of instrument..hit hit hit hit hit hit... think about it...who in their right mind would sit and beat on things for hrs on end....oh yea ME....if my hands arent bleeding by the end of practice...i wasnt playing hard enough..

..and one more thing....
does anyone know how the drummer ego started ?...i dont get that one... when im playing for people... im so their bitch...and i let them rule me (in a constructive non abusive way...remember were crazy..they dont want none of this yo)... but thats just cuz i really dont know much about string instruments and composition...

any snob asses out there ? i need to learn....

Do you mean YOU'RE being picked on by your band? I mean, nobody picked on Bonham, and Geddy and Alex don't gang up on Neil, and I'm pretty sure Def Leppard is nice to the guy with one arm, Coltrane didn't smack Elvin around, and Art Blakey and Buddy Rich were bandleaders. Do you just need a hug?

Now that u mention it a hug sounds nice...
But thats not what I mean... I said picked on.. but not literally.. I mean our opinions about a riff or how the vocals should go at some point are not taken siriously...

I am the drummer for a band and everything I say is taken seriously, in fact, what I say is taken equally and usually above the rest of them. But that is probably because I co-started the band, and I write a moajority of the songs on guitar and bass, and swithc up when performing. But I totally see what you are saying, and could see that happening. In that situation, brush up on your music skills, and also let the guys know that you want to be taken fucking seriously, and if it becomes a continuous problem, then you know what to do from there.
