i'm amazed that i've heard no word about Tool.
¿or is that "not metal"?
Nearly everything on Undertow was wicked awsome (except that damn Sober - although the video was pretty wild).

anything on Kill 'Em All or Master Of Puppets.

I'm pretty partial to Megadeth's "Hangar 18" and "Symphony Of Destruction" as well.

And let us not forget Slayer's "Raining Blood" and "God Hates Us All"

I don't know about being the best, but my current fave is "Doll-Dagga Buzz-Buzz Ziggety-Zag" by Marilyn Manson.

...and, IMHO, ANYONE who nominated ANYTHING BY METALICA should have something moderately not nice happen to them. biggrin I mean boo-hoo "Napster is taking food out of my kid's mouth" ... I'll pity you when you're down to JUST ONE PORSCHE, OK Lars?

You have to learn to separate the music from the artist.

Oh, I do that just fine... I never liked Metalica, Don't like any of their songs... don't even think they're particularly talanted. However, the napster spat was what tore it and took me from a passive dislike, to active loathing. And it wasn't that they wanted to be paid for their work, it was how they, particularly Lars, handled it.

Damn!

Ok, ill ignore the people who jokingly named pop bands, but Converge to me structuraly and aesthetically falls on the hardcore side of things, metal-influenced and super-spazzy, but they definitely make me think "punk, fuckin rock!' and not "heavy fucking metal!"
To the guy goin off on Halford, you are a clueless sack of shit! Falsetto vocals are more a traditional part of metal than cookie monster or shout-core style.
Rammstein and Hatebreed are not metal, Rammstein are pop-industria (like NIN)l, and Hatebreed are hardcore (like Agnostic Front).

now before anyone gets on my ass, i am all for the mixing of music styles and the destruction of genre boundaries, but some of you people...damn

Blue Oyster Cult?
Uh no, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, arguments can be made but the BOC is definitely a rock band.

best metal songs i can think of right now in order they occur to me:
Classic
Judas Priest-Breakin the Law
Black Sabbath-Sabbath, Bloody, Sabbath
Iron Maiden-Hallowed Be thy Name
80's Metal
Metallica-Fade to Black
Slayer-Angel of Death
Anthrax-Indians
90's
Suffocation-Pierced From Within
Morbid Angel-Angel of Disease
Sepultura-Dead Embyronic Cells

and a bunch of others like
Amorphis-Drowned Maid
Dead Horse-Peaceful Death
Arcturus-Alone
Emperor-With Strength I Burn
Megadeth-Peace Sells

and don't even get me started about Mekong Delta

Fucking YEAH!
I was actually 13 or 14 when that shit came on MTV right around Halloween of '83 or '84, and I remember MTV had a Halloween concert broadcast featuring Grim Reaper, and the skinny blond "VJ" dude made fun of them right then and there. When Beavis and Butthead dug this shit up ten years later, I about peed. "That fat guy got his clothes at the rock and roll store at the mall!"

Seriously, though, I think one of the greatest metal songs ever is "Eat Me Alive" by Judas Priest.

So I was about to explode going through all these posts thinking "why haven't these people mentioned Three Inches of Blood, the greatest metal band ever?" when my fellow Canadians help me out and relieve the heart attack that was coming on. Sunrise over the Fjords is definitely the best metal song in existence today. Forget the metal vs hardcore debate. Just listen to this song, and everything will be okay. EL SUICIDO LOCO
