i dont think hearing a band can change everything u listen to, but rancid's out come the wolves definitely changed the way i thought about music

i am so full of shit, my sis bought me a comp cd called "punk you!" when i was in year 7, it totally changed my tastes... before then it was michael jackson, after then it was nofx, frenzal...
the first local chicago band i ever saw play. they turned me into a local band-aholic. now a great deal of the music i listen to is local musicians.
it also changed my life style. i grew balls and had the courage to drive into chicago by myself. went to see shows by myself. learned how to be social without the crutch of a friend by my side.

Heh, I used to be SUCH a Chicago local band ho a few years back; my friends and I would hit 3 shows in a 2-day weekend, or sometimes even follow the bands to IN or WI for shows. Lots of interesting stories from that era, let me assure you. Sadly, most of the bands I adored no longer exist, and the few that do, with the exception of Lucky Boys Confusion, have had massive line-up changes.
I think I'd have to give that distinction to VoiVod.
before they released "Nothingface" I was basically just into metal as a kid, and mostly mainstream stuff... before that, the most "underground" I got was probably Slayer, Venom, Kreator, Coroner, stuff like that.
after "Nothingface" came out and they talked about being influenced by everything from punk, to the Swans and industrial music, to prog rock... it led me to check out all those other styles, leading me at first to stuff like Dead Kennedys, Einstuerzende Neubauten, Birthday Party and so on... and it just kind of spiraled from there in terms of discovering and enjoying other styles of music, including more obscure metal bands as well.
in other words, they opened my eyes to music beyond metal at a young and (thankfully) impressionable age...
