I was very late on these guys. I did see a Thunders show on TV a long time ago in high school. It was on USA Network and he was cussing his head off!!! I had no idea who it was...and after I heard who it was I still had no idea. But covers are a great way to find out about the old school. I knew 'Chatterbox' done by the Sex Pistols....and much later 'It's too late" by the CandySnatchers. I like the 2nd record more but my favorite songs are probably 'Human Being' or 'Subway Train'. Never cared for Buster Poindexter, etc.

I've been a hardcore Michael Monroe fan myself. I'm all about the Hanoi Rocks. And The Throbs. *shudder* Hanoi and The Throbs are fucking sex on wheels.

come on now, lets be nice here...
I see what this person is saying, I assume they realise that unfortunatly Johnny Thunders influenced all that hair metal? just kidding.
I guess I need to be careful....I've started enough shit to last me a life time over on the Johnny Cash thread, Rick Rubens people are after me....
Im getting death threats....eeek

BACK TO THUNDERS:
I wonder if there is any NY Dolls footage on DVD yet?
I have some on VHS and the quality is terrible...

the rockin smiley kicks major ass!!!

...I am not aware of any DVDs. A friend told me KISS wanted to do the lipstick she-male thing...but it had already been done...so they did the KISS thing and, well....I think NYD influenced all kinds of music (good and bad) from the Ramones to Blondie to Loverboy.

The only DVD (I've heard of) including the NY Dolls is "The Old Grey Whistle Test". It was a TV show and if I remember well there's "Jetboy" performed live in 1973 or something. Don't know if you already know that: there are 2 Thunders DVD available ("Dead or Alive" with the Heartbreakers 1984 and "In cold blood" a short live performance where he is totally wasted).

Also, dissing Hanoi Rocks as "hair metal" is poor... You are missing on a great band and I also add that Mike Monroe & Andy McCoy were friends with Johnny, even appearing on "Que Sera Sera" (for Mike & Nasty) and there are some live recordings of "Pills" & "Gloria" taken during an old UK Thunders/Hanoi Rocks tour that are amazing.

RIP Johnny

I suppose I should have mentioned that I liked the Dolls as well, but hey - whatever. From now on, your name is Dick. Have a nice day, Dick.

I hear Hanoi Rocks is back out on the road! Count me in!

I don't understand these comparison threads anyway

Do you prefer Erik Satie or Liberace?

Saw them 3 times last year. Weird at first because it brought back a lot of memories but believe me, Andy & Mike still have it ! And I've never understood comparison threads either... Do you prefer Slayer or pigeons ?

The first Dolls album is fucking awesome. Too Much Too Soon has a coupla good songs but the production sucks. LAMF is a classic set of songs, but once again, the production is terrible. So Alone, Johnny's solo debut, is fantastic. Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory is heartbreaking. David Johansen's solo debut is also really strong (maybe better than either Dolls album). His second solo album merged uncomfortably close to Rod Stewart territory (Do Ya Think I'm Sexy Rod, not Maggie May Rod) and Buster Poindexter and any other shit he has done recently is obviously just to pay the bills.

And Dick...leave the lovely Lesa alone. smile

I like Johnny but Sylvain Sylvain never get as much credit, he played a lot of the leads...
I met Sylvain Sylvain, he was a really nice for a NY dude...he was also very short...
he wanted to make sure you knew he was in the Dolls, thats all he talked about, which was fine..
my bands front man kept telling him he thought Buster Poindexter was cooler than him...
Slyvain got a laugh out of it but you could tell he wasnt sure how to take it, he loves attention, he's a prissy lil thing....
anybody heard Sylvain's Criminals??
just wondering what thats like?
He sent our bass player a 45 of the Criminals but I didnt get to hear it. aint we the shit...
kiss

someone mentioned Kiss being influenced by NY Dolls, Kiss were doing a Dolls type thing before they went with the horror makeup, you can find old photos of them all queered up...
Aerosmith was another band that stole a move or 2 off the Dolls, in fact Aerosmiths manager was involved with the NY Dolls I believe, manager desided put more time into Aerosmith because the Dolls were so much trouble...

ps Lesa no my name isnt dick... why do you love dicks? love

Peter Criss lived at Jerry Nolan's place with him & his mother for more than one year. Guess what happened then...
