Cover versions are very often about as good for the originals as being handed over to Pinky + Perky- but are there covers of songs you think are better than their originals?

although i love bob marley, i think No Use For aName's cover of " Redemption Song" was better. but they changed it styles from reggae to punk.

Two that spring to mind. Although mor epeople are familiar with the Clash cover of 'I Fought The Law' I have always prefered teh Dead Kennedys version, I think because 'I fought the law and I won' just sounds more... punk- that and Jello Biafra being... just cool.

Secondly the Joe Cocker version of With A Little Help From My Friends- as much as i love The Beatles, his version just gives the song structure, and a structure which is just fucking... boss- he essentially reinvents the entire song.

Which is why I think it works... sorry, Ringo surreal

I have never been nor will I ever be a pearl jam fan but I really like the way they redid Last Kiss by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers. Sometimes I like the original with the happy music and the really really depressing lyrics, it just makes it really creepy. But Pearl Jam makes the music fit the lyrics and I like it.

I haven't heard a studio version either. Maybe we should start a fresh thread entitled "How many bands have covered Summer of 69 by Bryan Adams?"
Err.......... I'll start with Bowling For Soup. Any more anyone?

I think Patti Smith's version of "Gloria" is better than Van Morrison's original. Jimi's "Hey Joe". The Band's covers of Dylan's "I Shall Be Released", "Wheels On Fire", and "Tears of Rage" are all better than the originals.
