"Mass Romantic" is such a catchy album. They've got a new one coming out very soon. They've got a track from it on their website. It's pretty good.

ohh my god -- so many of my favorites already -- i love any thread that has the grifters, felt, rrm, six organs, and hrvatski in it!!!

however, you said BOTH "obscure" and "indie," mr. alive, so i'll go with only bands that were on small labels (bye bye the Feelies and Chills and Raincoats and Husker Du and the Shop Assistants!!!) and who are defunct or in serious hibernation because who really knows who's gonna stay obscure and who's not -- anyway, my list:

THE CLEAN
SWELL MAPS
THE LOFT (Creation band not the dance comp.s)
JUNE BRIDES
MOFUNGO
TALL DWARFS
THIS HEAT
YEAH YEAH NOH
THE URINALS
and CARDINAL

i'm certain i'll think of a dozen more instantly as soon as i hit 'submit' that i should have included, but i'll stand by alla these.

ps--the neon boys weren't very good, when you get down to it, even though hell and verlaine were in the same band and historical yadda yadda yadda... plus they only recorded like 3 songs right? might as well vote for any ole killed by death band, then...

Jeez...you'd think Blacklisted was a rock critic or something!

Ok...The Feelies should have been on my list....I fucked up. That band ruled. Although i did see them live opening for Lou Reed on the New York tour and they were the most frustrating band ever....they tuned their instruments between EVERY SONG....and not for 5 seconds...like 5 mins. And for anyone who knows The Feelies, this is a band that thrived on momentum.

Urinals...good one.
