As much as I dig Les's side projects and solo stuff, I still have to go with Primus on this one. It just moves and grooves like nothing else Les, Ler or Herb could do on their own.

The last good album was Tales from the Punchbowl. After that I wasn't to impressed. Sausage was a good side project, that was like in 94. I haven't heard any of the Frog Birgade, I've lost intrest in Les and his life.

i think Les Claypool is a seriously talented artist, no matter what he does..
early Primus still blows me away now-i still remeber the day i first heard Suck on This! i fucking love that album. As their albums progressed, i slowly started losing interest, but i think i will go back someday and just buy the whole catalog just for fun.
I totally forgot about Sausage-i do remeber liking that album a bit..i haven't heard the Frog Brigade stuff either..

Hooray! My sentiments exactly.
I'm a huge TIm Alexander fan is why, so when he left Primus was never quite so hot for me. I love Claypool. I love his side projects. But none of it can hold a flame to some classic primus.

I would generally vote primus over the solo projects. But have any of you heard Oysterhead, the gig he did with Trey Anastasio from Phish and Stewart Copeland, the drummer from the Police? It's a very, very cool blend of jam rock chops and Les's "weirdness" for lack of a better term. I love it.

although I really dig the primus stuff I'd have to say oysterhead was one of the best shows I've seen in the last few years. I swear it was like the next evolution of "band of gypsies". also les playing bass for "gov't mule" was pretty awesome

Oh, but if you like the brown album that's ALL about Les Claypool. Without his unique bass-technique and sound that album wouldn't even be half what it is tongue

les claypool is hot as ever...although primus will always be my first love.
everything he does is worthy....frog brigade is great...i've seen em countless times at this point....his little deal with oysterhead was mindblowing and i'll love whatever the guy does because he just has his own way....but my primary love was primus.

no doubt about claypool. he's amazing. i was just saying that the chemistry w/ler surpassed the solo stuff... in my ever so humble opine.

Both, any, all...
Les is a mad man with a great ability to rip on the bass. His new album Purple Onion sucked a bit though. I think he's been doing way too many drugs. I'm thinking of going down to NOLA to see the Col. Claypools Bucket of Bernies Brains cause I am a huge fan of Primus, Buckethead and anything to do with Parlament Funkadelic.

Primus was the best performance i've ever seen. (better than NIN) I saw them Free, and recently. actually one of the last times they played here.

Les is god. i still listen to Primus on a regular basis. The Melvins should get Les in the band. how crazy would that be!

Ive been in love with Primus since I was in high school. Theres really not much else out there. Anyone else hear the story of when Les Claypool auditioned for Metalica after Cliff Burton died? He went and threw down like only he can, dressed in a clown suit. The guys from Metalica basically said that he was amazing, but a little too funky for what they were lookin for. That cracks me up everytime i hear it.

Les and Kirk went to school together, so they are all friends. Les actually went and auditioned for them this last time too. The best show I say was Lollopoloza '93 (or '94) in Phoenix when Primus closed the show, and Kirk and Larz where there and got on stage and played a few Metallica tunes with them. That was Fucking awesome cause I was in the second row. Still got my Fishbone drum sticks I caught at the show.

Hmmm... I'm not sure if I agree here.

I'd go and see a show, for sure. But bands always split up for a reason. And usually (I'd say 99.9% of the time) them getting back together causes nothing but disappointment...

i completely disagree...and i'm a primus freak. its ridiculous however to box a musician into something and have it be stagnant. Hopefully them having taken a break for this long will make it even better when they do play again....but i think Les remains in the peak of his game. Just cuz he's doing something a bit different than what primus was does not mean he's blowing it..

I think that Primus is fine, but they have a "dated" sound, what with the slap twang bass hits and quasi-ska guitar riffs. But if you like them, I think they keep giving it their all. I loved the Brown Album and although Antipop sounded like Anthrax sometimes, the "On the Coattails of a Dead Man She Rides" is fucking awesome. As far as the solo stuff, it's not as tight, but fun. Oysterhead, Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade, Les and the Holy Mackeral, and the Rat Brigade not only bring a unique group of musicians together, they usually pump out great renditions of classic songs like All Day and Night, Isrealites, and what not.
