Okay, I'm probably giving away my hippie roots here, but has anyone heard of the Firesign Theatre? Subversive counter-culteral comedy at its finest. They were a perfect blend of high-brow intellectualism and stupid punnery. They're big into surrealistic concept-records, and I guess you have to have a tolerance for that sort of thing. For example, they did a recent album that was supposed to be a radio broadcast on the last day of the millenium - with the twist that the world really was ending. Cool, imaginative stuff.
Also, I've got to love George Carlin's "Playin' With Your Head," various Monty Python (I actually like their records better than their TV show), etc. And let us not forget Weird Al!

I really like this Monty Python record - Live at the albert hall recorded in something like 1974. Classic python and very, very funny.
Jasper Carrott, Jack Dee, Eddie Murphey and Eddie Izzard are also very funny in their standup routines that I have on MP3
