I caught the tribute to Joe Strummer at the Grammy's. Very, very classy of Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Little Steven Van Zandt, Dave Grohl and Tony Kanal for showing some respect to the late Joe Strummer They preformed a very awesome version of the Clash's London Calling. I was seriously in awe of it. It was that good. Elvis Costello was in amazingly great form, he looked better than he has in years, I'd say. He was even dressed more like the Young Elvis, than the new one we've seen in recent years. His last screaming of the final line "I never felt so much a' li, a' li, a' like!!" was so close to perfect that I was stunned by it. It was as if he was channeling Joe's spirit or something.

I'd rather see Rancid, Anti-Flag, and NOFX go out there instead and tribute him.

i second everything on the Clash tribute- those guys did a great performance last night.
Elvis Costello looked totally young too..we were wondering if someone was gonna sing that last line as well.
am i the only one that has a hard time thinking of Little Steven as Little Steven now that he is Silvio? confused

I also thought it was cool. I would have liked to have seen more wide angle stage shots to we could have seen the images on the videoscreens more.

I think in addition to Depeche Mode, Morrissey, and Elvis, The Clash have some great "imagery."

For four guys who probably average pretty close to 50 years old (Grohl brings the average down a little) I thought they rocked pretty hard. But on top of that, it was the gesture that was meaningful. But as it usually works with the Grammys, it takes the passage of LOTS of time, and in this case an untimely death, before greatness is recognized. I'm sure that when London Calling first came out, The Clash were nowhere near the Grammys. They were probably too busy honoring Milli Vanilli. This year's Milli Vanilli appears to be Nora Jones.

never...EVER...cover the Clash.

That is a rule.

Some have tried...all have failed.

i avoid watching the grammys on principle. and i didn't know that this tribute was even happening.

i don't think i'll pass judgement on it until i see it. but my hopes aren't high.

i was more looking forward to the R'n'R hall of fame ceremony. i assume mick&paul will be there, and there was word they'd still play with someone cool stepping in. but, since no one in the history of time is as cool as Joe, i'm not sure how well that'll go, either.

when is that, anyway?

But if you're trying to sell Mountain Dew and the new Hummer H2, then for fuck's sake do the tribute right: Mick, Topper, Paul, and Elvis Costello standing in.

But really, leave the Clash alone. PLEASE!

I sat through all 3 hours of that steaming pile of shit to see that tribute, and was totally--and not surprisingly--made sick by what I saw.

Mountain Dew is my favorite beverage. I wish I had an H2 and I love The Clash. What exactly made you sick? At least it wasn't NSYNC doing their version of White Riot.

I kinda liked the fact that people who you wouldn't have associated with Strummer or The Clash got up there and recognized him. If they just would have had some random punk group who were obviously influenced by The Clash it wouldn't have been as interesting. I wouldn't buy a CD of what we heard last night but I found it interesting for The Grammys.

Wait a minute here....are some of you saying that Bruce Springstreet (joke if you watched it), Dave Grohl, Little Stevo and Elvis Costello are not worthy of a Tribute. ack, ack, ack....

Granted Bruce/(Little Steven) is 50 yrs old now (wasn't Joe 50?)...but you find his musical history dating back to the Pre-Clash era unworthy...surreal

Dave Grohl...granted Foo Fighters is a little wack but a member of Nirvana shouldn't be worthy of paying homage to Joe...puke
Elvis Costello? Shit they practically grew up together in the music business...

Say what you will about the Grammy's in all its wackness, but Major Label Recording Artis, Boarding School Graduate, Son of a DiplomatJoe Strummer was most likely
smile his ass off looking at that riff...it's been my experience that the fans of Rock Stars are altogether way more snobbish then the Artists themselves...

I say Bravo to a job well done...it took 3 hours to get the damn thing right !!!

there is a deep and common thread that runs throughout the careers of springsteen, costello and strummer. knee-jerk venom spitting is ignorant.

while all artists performing the tribute are definitely due their fair share of respect, i found it awfully difficult to stomach.. especially after having to hear 'the rising' for the 12th time this year at some random award show...
bruce and little steven especially, made london calling more about them being up there than about joe or the clash...

now elvis doing it accoustic may have worked... confused

It might be time to get off your high-horses there, people.

First of all, say what you want about the rest of them, but you should NEVER talk shit about Elvis Costello.

The man was responsible for giving bands like The Specials a record label, and he was as politically-charged as the Clash were. Plus he was a contempary of Strummers, a true peer. He is also like-minded in his musical eclecticism as Strummer (reggae, anyone?), and could out-rock most performers half his age.

If you think NOFX has more of a reason to be up there...well, that's your opinion, which is cool. But I'll gladly take Costello, thanks.
