I love that site. Of course everybody's going to disagree with many, if not most, of the reviews because no two people have the same taste as one another. It's great to find out about new bands, though, and usually the reviews are interesting as hell. There's a lot of great writing on that site. I found Pitchfork by typing the names of my favorite bands into a search engine. I could never find a decent site that reviewed albums by non-mainstream bands, so that site, to me, is a gem.

By the way, if you haven't read their review of Jimmy Eat's World's latest album than you've gotta read it. So vitriolic, but that's what makes it so funny.

P.S. I wouldn't read it if you actually like that band.

I've got mixed feelings about the site-- on the one hand, I've learned about some great bands (including Songs : Ohia, my favorite), by reading their site. On the other hand, they've also praised really shitty bands like Rye Coalition.

But mostly, they have a kind of snottiness to them, like a record store clerk who turns up their nose at you because you're buying the Donnas or something. They also have a tendancy to overpraise certain bands (Wilco and Radiohead spring to mind). And, they also tne to be inappropriately snarly in their news section.

That having been said, I read the site almost every day-- their reviews, while not always the greatest, generally give me a fair idea of whether or not I'll like something (even if I disagree with the reviewers), unless they write one of those crappy, crappy "story reviews". Fuck I hate those.

So, has anyone else seen the HUGE front-page banner ads for SG on the Pitchfork site lately? They're, ummm...kinda hard to miss. wink

Reading pitchfork is like having to take an antibiotic for a potentially lethal infection, except it's a liquid antibiotic that smells awful, tastes awful, and makes you feel like someone is kicking you in the stomach while you're lying semi concious in an alley that smells like piss. Oh you'll get what you need, the journey there won't be pleasant though.

It's a great place for news, it's got some good reviews, but oh my god the level of pretention is so painful it's nearly unbearable at times. I love how any band that sounds remotely like Radiohead is ass raped in the reviews and comments, all the while they ignore the fact that radiohead's sound really isn't that unique or original either.

I'll keep reading until I find something better or at least slightly less biased

I used to check it from time to time. Sometime's they put down good reviews which can give you an idea of what the music is like, but sometime's they write such drivel. And of course, sometime's it's far to pretentious. But then again, they also pick up on some interesting stufff. But I don't read it too often nowaday's.

I used to read them all the time. Then in like 2000 they got all mean and started giving every album a bad review. Like 99% of what they reviewed they'd slag completely. When they gave an incredibly insulting review to a band featuring two of my coworkers I just gave up on it.

That said, I haven't been keeping up with new music like I used to... and they DID turn me on to Amon Tobin and Ninja Tune... maybe I should give them another shot.

Pitchfork delivers some great news. Their reviews are a bit wordy in my opinion.

What happened to smarmy comments underneath every news headline? That was one of my favorite parts of the site. Dude!

They also totally gave Zaireeka a 0.

everybody knows pitchforkmedia.com is elite
however, would anybody be so kind as to join me in the annihilation of popmatters.com that is not only pathetically stealing pitchfork's layout but also has the indecency to misquote The Smiths lyrics (!!!)

PS: Yes, I still love The Smiths and all the bands you love worshiped them too.
