For the most part, I absolutely hate live recordings. The sound is usually shit and the feel is never quite complete. Almost uneasy... However, there is one live album in my collection I can't go without mentioning.

The Jesus Lizard: Show - what a fucking album. I have never heard a source of energy this raw, EVER. David Yow... I love you.

Public Flipper Limited (Flipper, duh): double LP; album cover folds out into gameboard; the chatter between songs is the best; and, well-- it's Flipper-- the music is so awful you just want to scream.

Aw, but the songlist on that sucks!!! I'd say The Cure "In Orange," which actually is a video and not an album. Still kicks much ass, though.

i've never been a huge fan of live albums. ya really gotta wonder how live they really are. so many are overdubbed, making it not very live at all. nonetheless, here are a few that i dig:
johnny cash "live at folsom prison/san quentin"
siouxsie & the banshees "nocturne"
the cure "concert"
dead boys "night of the living dead boys"
johnny thunders & the heartbreakers "d.t.k. live at the speakeasy"
kiss "alive ii"
cheap trick "live at budokan"
judas priest "unleashed in the east" -but i don't really think that was recorded live
sid vicious "sid sings" just for the the talking between songs

Hmmm... it depends what you class as being a live album - I mean, a band can be recorded in a live setting, but in a studio where there is control over the levels and such things (something you miss out on when recording a live 'show'). Or there is just recording a live show...

I'm not being pedantic, but if you're talking about 'live recording' I own quite a few albums that are recorded in a live setting, which I adore and for rock/punk bands they seem to capture the sound much better (IMO)...

And the Jesus Lizard rock.

ya but if you combine Cure Show and its sister set Cure Paris you get something pretty damned good.

I've got mixed feelings. I love seeing and hearing live shows, but recordings often come off somewhat different and awkward. And it doesn't help that most bands in the last couple decades tend to 'fix' their live albums in post-production (in the studio they go back over and fix missed notes and such).

No specific favorites to list, I don't know if there's any perfect complete set in my opinion, just lots and lots of great little moments...
