Everyone's second favorite band to hate, Panic! at the Disco, is now all grown up and ready to make a "mature" album. MTV recently interviewed the band and learned a thing or two about what the group's been doing with itself.

Panic revealed that it's been holed up in a "mountain cabin" in Nevada crafting it's next rock opus; a record that will supposedly tell a love story and is already regrettably being refered to as a "concept album." Soon, we'll have The Wall, Tommy and Panic! at the Disco's yet-to-be-recorded-or-named sophomore disc.

Bassist Jon Walker excitedly told MTV about where Panic will fit into a time-honored tradition of relating tales of love and woe to disenfranchised suburban youth.

We all got together and created this — I guess you could call it a concept — that we all wrote and we were all involved with and pretty interested in. Most people who listen to our music can't relate to what it's like to tour and play shows and live on the road. That's the last thing we want to write about, because we do it all the time anyway. It's kind of a love story. It's a timeless age of romantic, poetic fantasies.

Panic! is like most modern-day bards, towing their popular tales from town to town in search of open minds and hearts. Soon the band will leave its cabin and head to the mean streets of LA where they may or may not work with noted producer, musician and conductor Rob Mathes, who worked on the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack.

Speaking of Nightmare, the Panic! boys were originally throwing around the idea of working with Danny Elfman, a plan which was later scrapped. An Elfman-produced collection of songs might be the only way I would give a Panic! record a spin. It's comforting to know I've dodged that bullet with no effort at all.

so, lemme get this straight...

a "concept" album about the "concept" of "she dumped me and i miss her but i hate her et cetera, ad nauseum..."

basically, to me, this reads as making the same album every other shitty maintreamo "pop punk" band has ever made, only they chose to "conceptualize" the terrible lyrics and repetitive generic four chord "my name is jonas" ripoff music. am i even close there?

kill 'em all, i say.

I wonder if anyone in PATD has bothered to study music theory.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway didn't endure because it had "commercial" appeal, rather because it had breathtaking music and vocal passages. Mix in some cryptic lyrics that weren't quite impenetrable from Peter Gabriel and a classic for the ages was created for us all to enjoy.

But maybe there's hope for PATD! I mean, the first Genesis album was nearly a carbon-copy of the Bee Gee's circa 1968.

You know, for all the amazing music that is out there, their sure is a lot of newswire stories about bands that shouldn't be on anyones radar that can legally create a membership on this site.

I know it's fun to hate sucky things in unison with others, especially on the internet. However one day you may discover it is even more fun to discover amazing things as opposed to simply criticize (which is a euphemistic appraisal of the situation.) Perhaps then we can replace the mandatory Fall Out Boy and Panic! stories that grace this site every other week with perhaps freshly discovered sounds.

A good place for everyone to start would be the (entire) Kemado records line.

Especially Dungen and Priestbird (formerly Tarantula A.D.).

Check the hundreds of stories I've written! I've done pieces on Fennesz, Dungen (Kemado), I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, The Black Angels, Peeping Tom, The Coup, The Sword (Kemado), Michael Mayer, Architecture in Helsinki, The Acid House Kings, The Legends, Junior Boys, Ed Banger Records, etc.

There have been stories covering most artists you could think of, new and old. Suffice it to say, every once in a while there will be a story that may cover more mainstream artists some people like and many people don't. We try to keep everyone interested to some degree!

Agreed. Lotsa great articles about up-and-coming bands grace the pages of the SG forums. Sadly, they tend to sink to the bottom like barbells on a fish hook though.

You know, I can't hate PATD as bad as some of you obviously can. Sure, its mindless schlock, but at least unlike some stuff out there, its talented and creative mindless schlock. Their lyrics are enjoyable and attempt to reach a little bit (emphasis on the little here, don't flame me) beyond the usual pop-punk conventions. I don't know, enjoyable and I'll probably check out their second piece.

Now Fall Out Boy? Pure schlock, attempting to appeal to the english major in fourteen year old girls everywhere.

Chiodos, crap schlock, attempting to appeal to the fourteen year old girls so the singer can pick them up (Anybody who knew them back in the day when they played shows at the Flint Local 432 knows what I mean)

The Almost: OH JESUS COME ON! YOU HAVE TO BE THE MOST ARROGANT SON OF A BITCH ON THE PLANET!

Ok I'm done I guess.
