Indiana based indie (no pun intended) label Secretly Canadian is celebrating over a decade's worth of releases this year. With signings that include Antony & The Johnsons and I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, the label has grown from a bedroom operation into an established source of quality sounds.
For its one-hundredth release, SC100, the Secretly Canadian crew have planned a special complilation to showcase the label's talent; artists have been selected to cover other's tracks. Label founder Chris Swanson spoke to Billboard about the project, revealing that each band on the record was assigned which band they were responsible for covering.
"We had a few artists we really wanted to be a part of it, but we had to have some constraints," Swanson says. "The bands didn't choose the songs -- we married the bands to one another. We actually had each band cover two songs; that way they'd maybe choose the obvious one as well as the dark horse. We wanted it to be a double-disc, but we thought that'd be too intense, so the digital version will be twice as long."
Although specifics for the digital version are still being worked out, the track list for the CD has been announced. The collection opens with one of the last recordings from the late, great Nikki Sudden "See(ing) Double," Nikki Sudden (June Panic)
Nice to see one of the more eclectic and interesting indy lables selebrating a milestone. Also nice to see June Panic getting some moe press. That kid can wail.
He used to have some sort of begeezed voice, but has matured greatly as a songwritter and performer.
