So Bono's being knighted. If they were gonna knight him, they should have done it in the 80s when U2 really kicked ass. Now he'll have the confused notion that How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb was as good as say Joshua Tree.

What they really should do is knight The Edge, Larry and Adam, and then not knight Bono, just to see his reaction. That would be awesome. Can you imagine the look on his face? If you thought Faith Hill's reaction at the Country Music Awards was something, it would be nothing compared to Bono at Buckingham Knight Night 2007.

But apparently it's not about the music, it's all about the humanitarian aid.

U2 singer Bono is to be knighted by the Queen in the New Year.

The frontman will be honoured for his humanitarian work, which along with Bob Geldof included organising Live 8 in 2005, and his services to the music industry.

The 46-year-old will receive the award at a ceremony to be conducted by British ambassador David Reddaway in Dublin.

Despite receiving the honour, he will not be awarded with the title of "Sir" because he is not a British national.

Wow, way to put an asterisk on the knighting right away. What's a knighting without the 'Sir'? How is anyone even gonna know 5 years from now? Will he sign his name, Bono The Knight?

That's actually cooler. Bono The Knight is way more flashy than Sir Bono, which is how he'd probably like it anyway.

He's doing a lot more than you people are, sitting here and criticizing him.

He deserves this. If only he were a British national, then it'd be even more awesome. Seriously, you people can criticize him and his band's music all day (and if you don't like/respect The Joshua Tree, then you should burn in Hell), but his outstanding work, among others, in getting the world at large to pay attention to the plight of Africa is astounding and should be respected. Yeah, he may be a celebrity doing things that some people may see as dumb or typical of celebrities, and being self-righteous and patting himself on the back, but goddammit, he really is helping make a difference, by getting more and more people on the wagon to help fix the world. I, for one, applaud him.

Sir Bono sounds like a Spanish dish, or a Latin law phrase.

Sir The Edge would the best greatest name in the history of ever, though.

A lot of people get things done in the world. The mark of a good person, in my Buddhist opinion, is to do so with humility. Being arrogant and flooding the airwaves with crappy self-indulgent music can score a lot of points against someone, regardless of the good they may, in fact, be doing.
I have no personal complaints against Bono, as I do not know him personally, and he is doing good things with his status as a celebrity, but it is his arrogance and annoying persona that turn me away from him and make me think it humorous that he is being knighted.
Of course, Knighthoods are being thrown about for every little thing these days, so what the hell.

all right, first off, leave the fucking music out of it.

Now, show that he is arrogant without using music or his sunglasses or anything like that. Attack the man and not his music.

Eh, Bono's fine by me, and I don't even particularly like U2. Also worth noting he was named Time's Person of the Year last year (along with Bill and Melinda Gates) for his humanitarian efforts, and has been on the short list for the Nobel Peace Prize.

If you read your own post, you brought music into the conversation.
As a lover of all things music, it is that aspect of his persona that bothers me. Arts are an expression of the man, and the life he portrays through his musical persona is what annoys me and what I find arrogant.

Leave his philanthropic endeavors out of it and show me something good he has done wink
You can't simply define rules for a discussion so as best to suit your argument.

what kind of life does he portray through the music? Have you actually listened to the albums and the songs? All of them? he has lived a rather interesting life.

It's just that I've heard the same old, tired excuses for people not liking U2 and it's all very boring and stupid. I'm right and they are wrong. All there is to it. if people would take the time to listen, I can guarantee there is at least 1 song in the catalogue that they will like.

To come to cassiel's defense -

When I saw U2 in a college gymnasium during the October tour, it was one of the best rock and roll concerts I ever went too. I wore my t-shirt every day.

Three years later when I saw them in a stadium that houses jimmy hoffa - it was one of the best broadway shows I ever went to. They are still here, still together and still making well produced pop-rock music - they must be doing something right.
