As of 12:30 this afternoon, we closed and locked the doors to Tower Sunset forever. The death of a legend that will sorely be missed.
It was a staple of Hollywood since the 70's and it will leave behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. I can't count how many people in the last three months that have told me their Tower life story, from their first purchase to their first celebrity sighting. Neither can I forget how many times customers have asked me just for a bag, "to remember Tower by." Most people will agree, whether they've shopped there in recent years or not, they all hold a special place for Tower in their hearts.
I may not have worked for Tower for long, but it's always been a part of my life. Never in my life have I seen so many people affected by the closing of something. And honestly, I don't think I will again.
I think the best memorial resides behind the store.
It formerly rested on the wall along the front of the store, when the closing was announced, customers started to leave their farewells and memories. After an attempted theft, it was moved behind the back gate where it had continued to gather signatures and messages. The most apt of those messages came from my boss Jim when he quoted Johnny Thunders.
