Yay for a long overdue yet perfectly timed article on one of my favorite bands. "Long overdue" in that (like many of my fellow "L.A. hipsters") G.R. have been on my radar for a few years now, but they have yet to break out of their cultish niche thusfar and articles like this could help change that for them; and "perfectly timed" because - as I understand it from their Myspace blog - they are just beginning work on a new album, so there will be yet another fresh chance for more people to discover them.
We're hardly "friends" but from having seen them play in damn near every venue and party they've rocked in L.A. (including that Echo show referenced in the article) to using (with permission, obtained via my music supervisor) their music in both of the films I've produced (including my new comedy feature, Life With Fiona - look for it at festivals next year) we're somewhat acquainted, and I think that if they continue to refine their gestalt and discard that which doesn't work (because not all of their ideas do, i.e. they're just like everyone else in that regard), they could end up being a notable force in music for a very long time.
I not only wish them well but am also very glad that SG and Helen_Jupiter have seen fit to shine a little light on them. Unlike many others who actively seek such attention, they - in my relatively humble opinion - actually deserve it.
I didn't read all of the article, my attention span tonight isn't ready for action, but what I did read was awesome. It made me go back and give Gram Rabbit another listen. I originally heard about them from one of the band members' dad. He plays piano and sings lots of Frank Sinatra, Rat Pack type stuff and I was playing the drums for his group last year. He's a great guy and he's very excited about Gram Rabbit. I listened to a bit of it and was so caught up with everything else going on at the time I didn't REALLY LISTEN to it. I keep seeing the name pop up though and this article has just sent me back to their MySpace page. .... I think I'm becoming a fan. Does anyone else think of Duke Nukem when they listen to Gram Rabbit?
Easily one of the bands I'm most proud of to say that comes from SoCal. The whole band is very friendly and very lovely people. Jessika VR being the loveliest in my opinion
Just a great band; and they more than just survived the sophmore slump!
I love the new tracks, thank you, but I NEED more.
