I've been looking around for a place to get mp3's. The place I use now, mp3city, is ok, but they don't always have what I'm looking for. For instance, these are the last few things I've been looking for:

CAN'T FIND
Mostly anything by (Devo)

I, Bifficus (Bif naked)

Still (Geto Boyz)

That one CD they put out (LEN)

Intergalactic Planetary(Beastie Boys)

Down to this (Soul Coughing)

FOUND
Emerge (Fischerspooner)

Heaven is an Orgasm (Lords of Acid)

Ava Maria[28 Days Later (Jacknife Lee remix)]

While some things are more popular than others, not being able to fnd ANYTHING by Devo is a little odd. So, if you use one of these services, are you happy with it? Which one is it? Do you find everything you are looking for? I'm looking for some place that houses alt-rock, hip-hop, and techno.

How much do they charge? Is there a minimum balance?

99 cents per song, or $9.99 per album. no minimum balance.

the downside is that I think you can only play them in itunes, or on your ipod if you have one.

You can easily strip the DRM from them if you were so inclined. Or just as easily burn them to CD and play them anywhere you want, or rip them back in MP3 format.

They include DRM (digital rights management) software in them. This means you're only authorized to play them on certain machines, burn them to disc a certain number of times, and play them on authorized devices.

However, as I said it's trivial to remove said DRM from the files.

Usenet news. Can be a bit hit or miss as to whether you'll actually ever get what you want.

Well I just downloaded a song from "BuyMusic.com", and it came in wma format because that's the only format it was available in, and after I committed, I got a message saying I can only copy the song four times and I can only rip it seven times.

I tried to convert it to ogg, and my converter reported that it couldn't decrypt the file; when I played it in WMP, (windows media player) my stereo enhance plugin wouldn't load, what are these people afraid of, geez! This is BS; mp3 city doesn't do this to their files. And they wonder why people share music.

Because I don't want to deal with any of this bullshit if iTunes is the same way.

So you're basing your opinion on iTunes by using someone else's service and not ever actually trying it out. Smart.

iTunes has no limitations on how many times you can copy the song or how many times you can burn it to CD. And as I've already said (twice even) you can easily remove the DRM using DeDRMS, PlayFair, QTFairUse, or Hymn.

I recommend you at least try the program before you blow it off.

No. I'm also basing it on the fact that I have to download their proprietary software before I can even access the site. I appreciate your suggestion.

Their "proprietary software" is probably the best media player that exists on your platform, or any platform for that matter.

As is common with Apple software you can only access their store from within it because it's tightly integrated with their other services. So you can do things you couldn't do on a website, like preview music and movies, a directory for podcasts, and nifty animations that let you browse by album cover like you would in a real store.

It would've taken you 5 minutes to download it, install it, and realize if it was for you or not. You've spent longer than that posting in this thread and wasting your time on another inferior service. I see you're just too stubborn to even consider trying it out, so I won't bother with you anymore.

Good luck with your search.

Also, if you're downloading music, break down and get a goddamn p2p. The RIAA will probably not come knocking on your door.

allofmp3

Its cheap and around 2 dollars for an album and or varied by the quality you choose for the individual mp3s, most songs are around 20 to 30 cents a piece... and no DRM.

Or if nothing else there's always StarBelliedBoy's suggestion...

My coworker told me about www.gomusic.ru. It's a nice site out of Russia and sells everything. The songs are $0.15 apiece. The quality is great and the selection is unbelievable. You load up your cart and charge your credit card lump sums ($20, $30, etc.) at a time and download away. I freaking love it because of all the totally obscure shit I've been able to find.
