Can't say I'm huge on Mastadon, I don't hate them, but I can't say I like them either, and they sucked when I saw them live, but then again, that was ozzfest the other year and they managed to make arch enemy almost sound like nu-metal or hardcore thanks to the horrible soundtechs, so I guess that wouldn't say much. I don't care for Mastodon's recordings either though, the riffs are cool enough, but I don't think the singer has any talent in his voice.

You're making me jealous . It seems like we here on the east coast USA can't get a good combo of bands to play on the same bill . I was bummed that I missed out on seeing King Crimson opening for Tool . Anywho , I see Mastodon will be playing at a club pretty nearby soon . May have to try to get to that show .

First to state, I like MASTODON, but here is my beef. It's with their current fan base. These are the same people that champion bands like THE SWORD, EARLY MAN and HIGH ON FIRE (who are local and I do like) as the flavor of Metal today and wouldn't know the roots or who flies the flag for the genre.

It's "safe" Metal for the alternatives or indie rockers. It's got elements of Metal, but if you asked them to get into something like GORGOROTH, AGALLOCH or SLOUGH FEG, it would be too hokey for them to get into Metal in it's purist form.

You're either Metal or not. There are no compromises.

Remission is their best work IMHO. I really wasnt feeling all of Blood Mountain. ISIS' new album let me down too.

Safe metal? Whatever, Mastodon are a great band period. Why oh why must you all have to categorize music so much, what are we in second grade?

first, high on fire is far from safe. second , all those bands you named are blackmetal, which by the way , is huge with the hipsters right now. I saw a fucking hipster with a mayhem shirt the other day. thanks for playing.

I love Mastodon simply due to the fact that their music never quite grabs me at first. I'll get the new album, be disappointed by it, return after about a month, love it, and after that point it'll simply never get old. It happened with Leviathan, and I can feel it happening with Blood Mountain, which I currently listen to daily. Plus, I'm off to see them with Tool on Saturday biggrin
