Nobody ever seems to respond well to my musical elitism... maybe cause I am just a jerk. But here is my take on it.

There are way too many bands today. Pro-tools + myspace + guitar center = an army of disillusioned rip off artists in every city with a population over 15.

I think everyone should be a music snob. If a band sucks... tell them, send them hate mail, start dating the drummer and then fuck the singer... do whatever you can to make them go away.

More importantly, if a band is good. Give them your money. Buy a CD, buy a shirt... go to the show. Help them rise above the annoying masses of shite.

oh, and stop listening to the radio.

SNOBS? anyone with me? It's ok to be a hater. The industry needs your criticism more than ever. Think about the kids!

ARRR!!!

edit = yeah there i go being a jerk again and fucking up the subject line by trying to make a cutesie heart. oh well.

Yeah, I like this equation much better than the old one:

Corporate radio + corporate music store = brainwashed consumers

And you are right, it is fun being a snob. You can check out as many myspace sites as you wish: reject, reject, and never waste a dime.

oh snap! that would hurt a lot more if you didn't like interpol.

"this is the one note i sing. i like to sing this note. there are other notes to sing. but i like this one"

it does sting a little bit though cause dead low tide gets you major scene points... pretty girls make graves are fucking sexy... and murder city, well yeah. i got peed on at one of their shows once. good times.

Because only super secret cool guys can listen to the bands you like...

Or anyone within walking distance of a mall.

One or the other.

let's be real here... you can find the shit i listen to at any reputable indie record store... but not at the mall.

and i applaud your movie snobbery! pedestrian is an excellently demeaning word that i am sure to use in the future. thx.

(Yeah, I know I know. I consider myself more of an "aficionado." An aesthete, if you will. bok )

I hate the fact that I receive 5 band friend requests a day. They always suck. I'm sure there has to be a few diamonds in the rough, but not too many.

The problem with music snobs is the fact that less and less of them are capable of defending their snobbery.

Instead, they post a thread like this.

By the way: half the bands on your list can be found in nearly any Hot Topic.

Dude, like 95% of his list can be found at Best Buy. confused

(Surprisingly good selection at competitive prices! I live in the suburbs and it has saved my musical life in the time that I didn't have a car to get me to an indie store.)

i dont care if the bands i listen to are super secret... the point of this post is that i dont want them to be super secret.... i want good bands to get recognized... not the next american idol, or panic at the disco, or lindsay lohan or the fucking arctic monkeys. but alas... you have forced me to revise my list to include more super secret bands... hopefully one day they will all be found at best buy, cause that means buyers and suits in the industry are getting a clue.

and furthermore... the point is not whether i like good shit... fuck the bands i like... cant we all agree that there are WAY too many shitty bands out there making WAY too much money and getting WAY too much critical praise (ie: arctic monkeys, yin yang twins, the subways, the pink spiders... and so on). there has always been shitty pop music... but it is shittier then ever...

the point is music snobbery is stupid.
it causes people to act like elitist idiots, and has a tendency to cause people to close their ears off to everything that isn't their "type" of music.

all music has merit, and all music has value.

snobbery of any form is bullshit. especially in regards to creative expression.

ok dude. your first post in this thread was an act of music snobbery. you said the bands i like suck. which is fine. but henceforth makes you a total hypocrite.

second. no. the world does not need jennifer lopez or lindsay lohan to make another record. the world does not need another rapper to talk about treating women like shit and shooting people. and no. jessica simpson's cover over nancy sinatra has absolutely zero "value".
