Ten years ago, I never would have imagined a time in which Green Day would be the biggest band on the planet. These days Green Day is synonymous with Pay Day and everyone from bro-dog Coors drinkers to your parents think they're great. No one knows exactly when Billie Joe sold his soul to the devil, but he definitely did.

After the outrageous success of 2004's American Idiot (5 million copies sold, a Grammy, etc.) and its subsequent tours, the band took a well-needed vacation. According to MTV, break-time has come and gone and the trio is back in the studio writing another album.

Don't get too excited yet, as details are scarce; there's no word on producer, title or potential release date, but at least we know the bees are back at work in the hive. The band promises a full (and informative) update next week.

God I fucking hate American Idiot. Dookie still rocks though.

And that's all I have to say... about that.

I didn't really like much of American Idiot. I saw them performing the tracks when they were shiny and new, at Reading 2004. Although American Idiot wasn't as bad (in my opinion) as Warning, I guess I still just prefer Dookie. Lots of memories attached to that album. In fact, I had my first ever kiss to 'She'. Yes, I'm a loser.

But I am looking forward to hearing the new stuff when it eventually emerges. I'll always have a soft spot for Billie Joe.

I agree, they sold out.

Or then again maybe Margot is right, maybe it's we that have changed, not them.

I wasnt under the impression that GD sold out... just that they sucked for a few albums, and then their label decided to spend a shitton of money on promoting their new album and it was decent so it sold.

If they can push Paris Hilton, the can sell the shit out of GD

I hate Green Day threads almost as much as I love Green Day.

They didn't sell out. Anyone who argues that they did is an idiot. In fact, anyone who uses the term in general is a moron and has no understanding of the music business or life in general.

You know, when I wrote this, I KNEW that the "sold his soul" bit would be misconstrued as me igniting the whole "selling out" debate.

I was more refering to Green Day's "dumb luck" with success, not the fact that they are not the punkiest punksters in punk land. I meant the phrase in the Jimmy Page sense of the timeless rock n roll myth yadda yadda yadda..

That said, sorry for any confusion.

Yeah. I got that from your post. "Selling your soul to the devil" is definitely different in rock terms than "selling out". Hell, that's a badge of honor, really.

I was responding more to subsequent posts (and the inevitable "Green Day suxx0rz111!! s3ll 0uts!!" posts that always come in threads about them).

I'm not a huge fan but I still think they're great.

And hey, I'd much rather kids were brought up listening to actual artists like Green Day than Paris Hilton or any of that superficial garbage...

I don't really care much for Green Day anymore, but I'm certainly not one to begrudge anyone selling a lot of records. I hope they have continued success (I'd just never again like to hear "When September Ends," please oh please).

I think my favorite part of all this is that with the 10,000 American Idiot promotional pictures out there you used one that is like 15 years old.

Yeah, I hate the term 'sell-out', Subrosa is very smart. I didn't not like 'American Idiot' because of them 'selling out', I just wasn't feeling the music.

exactly. there will always be a little place in my heart for Green Day...hell, Dookie was the first cd i ever bought. i didn't dig their later stuff too much just because i'm not big into their music anymore. but i don't think it's bad, and i certainly don't think it's bad just because they're making money off of it.

Yeah, there's plenty of reasons to not like Green Day or to not get into their later stuff. I just hear "sell out" and I start having steam come out my ears. I've been following them for so long and seen how hard they've worked and how many people in the scene that they've helped that to argue that they've somehow sold out their roots is fucking mind-boggling to me.

They've made tons and tons of money in no small part because they are very, very, very good at what they do. In my mind (even though it's bizarre for me to hear think of them in these terms) they deserve to be the biggest band in the world. They've earned it.

(And I probably should have said it was " a subsequent post" sans the "s" that I was responding to.)
